ON THE MOUND
Brandon had to work out of a jam in the 1st (runners at the corners with two out) but, eased through the 2nd and 3rd, seemingly under control. In the end, it seems wild pitches would do him in. With one on, two out in the 4th a wild pitch moved the runner to 3B and then the next pitch went out and the Padres took a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Brandon gave up another homer (this one of the solo variety) in the 5th and, was unable to escape the 6th – he gave up a couple of singles and another wild pitch before a walk and another single plated TWO and that would be it . . .
5.2 innings ~ NINE hits ~ SIX runs ~ FIVE earned runs ~ ONE walk ~ TWO strikeouts
} Charlie went 1.1, an inherited runner scored on Nick’s error
} Danny had another VERY impressive outing – TWO hitless, scoreless innings with FOUR strikouts
AT THE PLATE
The M’s scored their lone run in the only inning that Volquez really struggled – the 2nd. They loaded the bases with no outs but were only able to come up with the ONE run. They had another chance in the 4th but, not only did they not score when Michael S doubled after Michael M singled but, Morse was injured running the bases (seemed to come up with some sort of leg injury just prior to sliding to the plate). Not often they collect more walks (FIVE ) than hits (FOUR) but, at least good to see Michael S getting back on track a bit with the double and THREE of the walks.
IN THE FIELD
* great homer saving catch by Endy (does he do this every game?)
* nice back-handed catch and throw at 3B by Kyle (with the bases loaded) to stop the bleeding in the 6th
* the Padres got an unearned run in the 6th via Nick’s first big league error (muffed ground ball)
