g9 2020 | strong arm; weak bats

Mariners 2 | Athletics 3

ON the MOUND

And Yusei makes it THREE starters in-a-row to record zero run start . . . unfortunately, he gets a no decision in his best ever start…

6 IP – 3 H – 0 ER, 9 SO 1 BB

Margevicius with the blown save in the 7th

AT the PLATE

  • first game of the season w/o an extra base hit
  • Kyle Lewis’s 16 hits leads the majors and his hitting streak continues to NINE games

IN the FIELD and ON the BASES

  • TWO DP’s: Long, Crawford and . . .

What a double-play!

  • ONE SB: JP
  • no errors

g8 2020 | Welcome Home!

Mariners 5 | Athletics 3

  • first home game of 2020
  • first home win
  • three WINS in-a-row
  • made it to .500

The Mariners Home Opener wouldn’t be the same without the “Make-a-Wish” kid to run around the bases ❀ and, bless her heart, she did it in an empty stadium – just Lily and the Moose . . .

ON the MOUND

Welcome back to Seattle, Taijuan!

He followed up Marcos great start w/one of his own and together they threw back-to-back starts w/zero ER’s. Krueger noted on the postgame that SEVEN of his EIGHT strikeouts were via the slider.

AT the PLATE

  • Evan White: first T-Mobile hit was a wall-ball double
  • Kyle Lewis: EIGHT game hitting streak, SIX games w/multi hit streak
  • the “Kyles” both tied w/EIGHT RBI on the season so far

IN the FIELD and ON the BASES

No errors, no DP’s, no SB’s

g3 2020 |win number ONE!

Mariners 7 | Astros 6

The M’s have now equaled their win total vs. the ‘stros for all of last season . . . . . . . yes – ‘t was only ONE πŸ˜‰

box score

ON the MOUND

Yousei was the third M’s starter in as many games to run into a big inning but, the M’s batters handed the ‘stros a big inning of their own (or – at least big enough to take and keep the lead) – the M’s bullpen really stepped up – Taylor recorded his first career save and the M’s first win in 2020!

  • Yousei ~ 3.2IP – 5H – 5R – 5ER – 4BB – 4SO
  • Bullpen SIX relievers combined for ~ 5.1 – 4H – 1R – 1ER – 1BB – 8SO

AT the PLATE

  • All but two starters recorded at least ONE hit – for a total of ELEVEN
  • FOUR doubles, including Kyle Lewis’s two-run two-bagger to continue his HOT start
  • FIVE different starters contributed RBI
  • showing a little patience w/FIVE walks

IN the FIELD and ON the BASES

  • Lopes w/an outfield assist
  • DP = Crawford-Long-White
  • SB = Lopes, Long

Here’s to splittin’ the series with a W in Houston tomorrow!

g1 2020 | they’re baaaaaak!

I’m rusty and not gonna lie, this new fancy WordPress editor will take some getting used to πŸ˜‰

Opening Day 2020 . . .

didn’t come till today ~ July 24th

No fans in the stands.

TV broadcasters remote.

Players masked and socially distanced.

But . . .

it. is. baseball.

SEA 2 | HOU 8

OK, so it wasn’t the stellarest of openings but, it is back and dad and I were watching from our virtual seats . . .

ON the MOUND

Marco’s second opening day start 4.1 IP – 5H – 4R – 3ER – 1BB – 2SO

Bullpen combined for 3.2 IP – 5H – 4R – 4ER – 3BB – 3SO

MAJOR LEAGUE DEBUTS (youngest team in baseball!)

  • Evan White 1B = first major league hit (single)
  • Jose Marmolejos LF = 0 fer 3 w/2Ks
  • Anthony Misiewicz RP: ONE inning, ONE run
  • Yohan Ramirez RP: ONE inning, only M’s pitcher to not give up a run

AT the PLATE

couple of solo shots was all she wrote . . .

Way to go Kyle & Kyle!!

IN the FIELD

Kyle w/an error; no DPs

Meet the 2020 Mariners

ed-Gaaaaar!

Congratulations, Gar!
This honor is SO well-deserved and long-overdue!

Thank you for your amazing talent, fabulous work ethic and unending loyalty to our team and our city. The memories would have lived on forever in Mariners fans’ hearts and minds regardless but now, the rest of baseball can cherish them as well ❀

Spent a wonderful weekend on the coast with family celebrating my Father-In-Law’s 95th birthday ❀

But, was glad to be able to hear the entire Hall of Fame induction ceremony, including our beloved Edgar Martinez, on MLB Network Radio on the way home.

g19 | four stee-rate :-(

Kikuchi’s late start continues . . .

but, he ends up with decent numbers in his first loss (6IP ~ 5H ~ 3ER ~ 3 BB ~ 5 K)

the ‘pen did no favors (also allowing THREE runs)

K’s a plenty but, O looking up a bit . . .

  • Mitch, leading the AL in extra-base hits, extends his hitting streak to SEVEN
  • Edwin + Omar extend the homer streak to NINETEEN games
  • TWO doubles ~ TWO homers ~ FOUR walks

a tale of fieldingΒ  . . .

After the M’s get to within ONE (via back-to-back jacks from Edwin and Omar) a fabulous catch by Allen robs Ryon in the bottom of the 8th

Then flubby fielding in the top of the 9th gets the Tribe back up by TWO to stay (you don’t want to see it and I don’t want to dwell on it but, they have GOT to address this – soon).

Let’s start fresh tomorrow . . .

g18 | swept away at home

felt more like a giant wave than the bristles of a broom 😨

Turns out the sweep clinching solo shot was the run that gave Brandon Brennan an ERA 😟

ON the MOUND

It would have been nice to see Marco go a little longer than 5.1 IP but, 5H ~ 2ER ~ 2BB ~ 3K isn’t too bad, given the level of competition.

But for that pesky, aforementioned homer, the bullpen performed admirably – combining for: 3.2 IP ~ 2H ~ 1ER ~ 1BB ~ 4K

AT the PLATE

clearly, ‘t was the M’s batters that were the issue . . .

another FIFTEEN K’s (but 11 of them were via Cole who’s averaged 8.3 per start so far, so there’s that)

and only FOUR hits!

but what REALLY stands out is . . .

img_0869

But hey, thanks (AGAIN) to Mitch – the streak is still alive . . .

img_0871

Now, here comes the Tribe.

g17 | another loss, streak alive, Felix back

M’s 1 | Astros 3

I can hear it now . . .

back to the same ol’ M’s, blah, blah, blah.

But, I find it more . . .

ENcouraging that Felix had a solid outing (SIX IP ~ SIX hits ~ THREE runs ~ ONE walk ~ FIVE K’s) against a good (if not GREAT) team

than DIScouraging that our offense couldn’t muster up much – ‘t was Verlander, after all

And – the STREAK is still ALIVE!!!

Thanks, Mitch πŸ™‚

tweets of the game . . .

g16 | well, at least the homer streak is still alive – SIXTEEN!

Ms 6 | Astros 10

on the MOUND

‘t was the ‘battle of the Wades’ – Miley vs LeBlanc . . .

  • good news: our Wade outlasted their Wade, despite giving up a lotta extra-base hits, he only gave up TWO runs, struck out FIVE and went .2 innings longer than their Wade
  • bad news: our Wade only made it through 4.2 innings before leaving w/a lat injury
  • in other bad news: the TWO “A” bullpens guys – Armstrong and Alaniz (major league debut) EACH gave up a grand slam . . . yes TWO grand slams in the same game 😦
  • positive note: maybe Gearrin has settled down a bit – second straight game w/o a walk after starting the season rather wildly

at the PLATE

  • good news: THE STREAK is ALIVE! Thanks to Tom Murphy’s homer in the 9th (which would have tied the game had the Astros not gotten that pesky, second grand slam πŸ˜‰ )
  • other good news: another game w/at least SIX runs (FOURTEEN of their first SIXTEEN games!)
  • still more good news: the hitters continue to have good, patient at-bats – made the other Wade throw 41 pitches in the 1st
  • obvious bad news: it wasn’t enough (the ELEVEN K’s didn’t help much

in the FIELD

  • no double plays but, hey, no errors πŸ™‚

of great starts, homer streaks and too many errors. . .

Well, this was unexpected!

Whodathunk that the Mariners would be leading the majors in WINS after the first ELEVEN games?!? Granted, they’ve played TWO more games than every other team but the A’s but, still . . .

Going in to today’s rubber match w/the White Sox, this was the stat leader board . . .

fullsizeoutput_538f

Yes! YOUR Seattle Mariners were leading in ALL the above offensive categories! (plus doubles and stolen bases – which didn’t show within the screen print) πŸ™‚

And, AFTER today’s game . . .

the homer streak is alive! ELEVEN straight games with a home run!

And, the pitching isn’t all that bad – EIGHT wins from starters and SIX saves from relievers (despite our closer being on the IL)

And then there’s the defense . . .

once upon a time, among our strongest suits, now the weakest sauce 😦
