g113 | series (and season!) sweep of the Braves

Mariners 7 | Braves 3

Safeco Field in the Seattle summer sunshine (especially on a WEEKDAY afternoon)  . . .
doesn’t get much better. (well, except a WIN and we got that too!)

sunny safeco 8.6.14

ON the MOUND
Mr. Young started out on cruise control . . .
he retired the side in order (w/THREE K’s) in the first TWO innings. Then came the 3rd where he loaded the bases via THREE straight singles and then walked in a run (ugh!) and then gave up a TWO-run double. Chris hung in there, and though he threw a ton of pitches (92) he was able to post FIVE full and, ultimately (thanks to some awesome O) earn the victory.
FIVE innings ~ SEVEN hits ~ THREE earned runs ~ ONE walk ~ SIX strikeouts

The bullpen was fully rested (since the off-day on Monday was book-ended by Kuma and King’s 7+ innings) so, maybe a good thing that they got some low leverage work in . . .
} Joe allowed a hit to the only batter he faced but, Dom and Tom each pitched ONE scoreless frame
} Charlie and Yourvis combined for TWO more scoreless innings

AT the PLATE
The bats breakout!
And, turns out I missed the 3rd inning hit parade, due to the fact I was a little late to the ball park and then decided to eat my chicken and garlic fries in the sunshine of the third level concourse (it was beautiful!) Anyhoo, by the time I took my seat, the M’s were leading 5-3
~ Ack, Robbie and Kyle all had multi-hit games
~ Ack and LoMo each with homers (LoMo’s of the THREE-run variety!)
~ Chris keeps contributing – he built a picket fence: ONE hit, ONE walk, ONE run, ONE rbi
~ Jesus was the only hitter without as least ONE hit

IN the FIELD
Love, love, lovin’ the DEE!
* Austin with a nice OF assist
* Dustin with an awesome running catch (that, frankly I though he might lose in the sun as he had a few innings earlier) . . .

g112 | FOUR is a magic number and Felix is . . . just plain magic

Mariners 4 | Braves 2

M’s are 42-10 when they score FOUR or more runs . . .
and yes, Felix should have at least FIVE more wins but, regardless, he is a JOY to watch and a DOUBLE joy to watch when he gets a lead 🙂

ON the MOUND
and that’s why they call him K’ing . . .

  • 1-2-3 in the 1st
  • a lead-off double and a single in the 2nd led to the Braves only run
  • a single and a walk in the 3rd are both stranded
  • and then, Felix would merely retire ELEVEN in-a-row (face the minimum in innings 4-8)

EIGHT innings ~ FOUR hits ~ ONE earned run ~ ONE walk ~ EIGHT strikeouts

} Nando made things a little interesting in the 9th – giving up a lead-off double that would eventually score but, in the end, earned his 31st save and preserving Felix’s 12 win and the M’s 58th victory

AT the PLATE
The Braves got their lone run in the 2nd, the M’s scored ALL FOUR of their runs in the 4th . . .
via a HBP (Kyle) THREE singles (Chris D, LoMo and Austin) and a TWO score on a fielding error of Chris T’s ball in play (Chris also had the M’s only extra base hit – a double in the 3rd). After that, a couple of walks and a single – luckily, they didn’t need more.

IN the FIELD
* Nice around-the-horn double play in the 7th
* Chris Taylor with a diving stop and a great throw for the third out in the 8th

g59 | Kuma’s back, shutdown pen and leave it to the Beavers

Mariners 2 | Braves 0

leave it to beaver

ON the MOUND
Great to see Kuma bounce back from a couple of rough outings . . .
and with authority, no runs and no walks (not too shabby with the bat either: walk, sac bunt, K) on 96 pitches
SEVEN innings ~ SIX hits ~ ZERO earned runs ~ ZERO walks ~ SEVEN strikeouts

} Now FIFTEEN scoreless innings for the BP. Today’s contributors ~ Yourvis and Nando ~ each with a hitless, scoreless frame and ONE strikeout. Nando’s 16th save.

AT the PLATE
~ Lots of hits (NINE), not a lot of power (ONE triple the only EBH) and WAY too many K’s (THIRTEEN)
But, it was  j u s t  enough ~ leave it to the Beavers!
Cole and Stefen the only batters with multi-hit games ~ both with TWO hist, Cole with an RBI, Stefen with the only extra-base hit (a triple)

IN the FIELD
* ONE double play (Robbie-Brad-Willie)
* Willie was at 1B today and made a nice line drive snag in the 6th
Brad had a couple notable plays . . .
a nice charging, quick release in the 3B and a not-so-quick release in the 9th (was so close it was challenged but, review confirmed the original call on the field – OUT)

g58 | oh no, Erasmo ~ yessiree, BP and the bats!

Mariners 7 | Braves 5

ON the MOUND
Erasmo dug himself into a hole early, giving up TWO doubles and TWO homers so, despite pitching out of a bases-loaded jam in the 3rd, that would be his last inning
THREE innings ~ EIGHT hits ~ FIVE earned runs ~ ONE walk ~ FOUR strikeouts

BP was NAILS!
Tom + Dom + Danny + Nando = SIX scoreless innings, giving up only TWO hits, TWO walks and NINE strikeouts

AT the PLATE
Surprises abound in Hot-Lanta . . .
~ Stefen with a PINCH hit THREE-run homer (that tied the game at FIVE in the 4th
~ John with his FIRST homer as a Mariner (a TWO-run shot that put the M’s ahead for good in the 7th)
~ Brad and James with the other RBI’s
Plenty of hits (THIRTEEN) w/ a couple of stark contrasts . . .
~ Kyle and Justin = 0-10
~ Robbie and Michael = 5-10

IN the FIELD
* Brad-Robbie-Justin with a DP
* James with an error
