Yes, it was the “lowly ‘stros” – but, remember the M’s were only 10-9 against them last season and 5-5 going into this series. They finally took care of the business as they should have and put a little dent in that “playing to the level of their competition” they’ve been epitomizing (it’s great when they’re playing good teams, not so much when playing the weak sisters)

Mariners 5 | Astros 2

broom 1

ON the MOUND
Mr. Young turned in one of if not THE best start of his season…
TWO solo shots the only damage the ‘stros could muster
SEVEN innings ~ TWO hits ~ TWO earned runs ~ ONE walk ~ EIGHT strikeouts

} Danny, Yourvis and Nando combined for a scoreless TWO and Nando’s arrow flew for the league-leading TWENTY-FOURTH time

AT the PLATE
THIRD game in-a-row w/double-digit hit game . . .
~ including THREE doubles (LoMo, Robbie and Dustin)
~ middle of the order with all the RBIs (Kyle, LoMo and John)
~ top to mid of the order with all the runs (JJ, Robbie, Kyle and LoMo
~ and they all came in the middle of the game (5th & 6th innings)

IN the FIELD
* NO DPs from either side
* Springer robbed Brad of a sure extra-base hit

g68 | five in-a-row in the bad column . . .

Mariners 3 | Rangers 4

5 in a rowON the MOUND
Erasmo wasn’t sharp or efficient, taking 89 pitches to go FIVE but, it was definitely progress, as they were scoreless innings . . .
FIVE innings ~ THREE hits ~ ZERO earned runs ~ FOUR walks ~ FOUR strikeouts
} The good news is that Lord Farquhar struck out the side in the 6th. The bad news is that he allowed THREE runs in the inning (single, double, K, K, homer, K)
} Joe and Yourvis each went ONE scoreless inning
} Nando, came in for the 9th in a 3-3 tie and went ground out, single, ground out, single to allow the leading run to score

AT the PLATE
Double digit hits (ELEVEN to be exact) but didn’t make enough of them count . . .
~ Seager, as per usual vs. the Rangers, had a multi-hit game
~ James, Robbie, John and Willie also w/2 hits each
~ RBIs = Robbie, John and Stefen
~ Runs = Robbie, John and Willie
~ In the 6th, down by TWO, Robbie singled and Jesus followed with his first Mariners hit this season – he was then then lifted for a pinch-runner (Dustin). Robbie scored via John’s single on an awesome slide to tap the plate but, avoid the tag (the SAFE play was challenged, field ruling UPHELD)
~ In the 7th, with ONE out and the bases-loaded, Robbie hit a sinking line drive that short-hopped into the fielders glove, allowing Willie to score from 3B

IN the FIELD
* In the 1st, a SAFE call at 2B was challenged and OVER-TURNED, giving the M’s a strike-em out, throw-em out DP to end the inning
* In the 2nd, after a lead-off walk, Chirinos doubled and then a really nice relay: Stefen-to-Robbie-to-John to nail the runner at home

* In the 4th, a scary moment in the OF when Stefen and James collided, James belly flopped on the ground and it wasn’t clear until the replay that Stefen was the one in possession of the ball (and both seemed OK)
* In the 7th, an interesting “synchronized diving” play by the runner trying to get back to 1B and Willie flying to try to tag him (the OUT play was challenged and OVER-TURNED)

g63 | follow the yellow-brick road . . .

Wait . . . isn’t that supposed to lead to the Emerald City?!?
With an overall record of 34-29 the M’s have logged some quirky numbers . . .
~ they have played 34 road games (their total number of wins) posting a 20-14 record
~ they have played 29 home games (their total number of losses) posting a 14-15 record

yellowbrick road

In any case, we’ll take a 7-game road trip like they just completed anytime!
6-1 record ~ outscored opponents 34-15 ~ struckout 68 batters ~ tossed 3 shutouts

Mariners 3 | Rays 0

ON the MOUND
Unfortunately, I’m sensing a pattern here ~ when Erasmo pitches, bullpen get ready . . .
He didn’t allow any runs in his FOUR plus innings but, walking FIVE batters (and a tightrope) isn’t exactly going to inspire confidence. Here’s hoping Taijuan and/or James are ready soon!
FOUR.TWO innings ~ FOUR hits ~ ZERO earned runs ~ FIVE walks ~ FIVE strikeouts

} Joe, Dom, Danny and Nando combined for the other FOUR.ONE scoreless innings, allowing only ONE hit and ONE walk and striking out another FOUR batters (Nando got to shoot the arrow for the 18th time)

AT the PLATE
Focus on THREE as all THREE runs of the game were scored in the THIRD inning . . .
~ All but THREE of their SEVEN hits occured in the THIRD inning
~ where they hit THREE singles: Joe, Willie, James (his of the bunt variety to load the bases)
~ followed by a Robbie TWO-run double
~ and a Stefan RBI ground out and wha-la! THREE run lead (that would stick)

IN the FIELD
* Only ONE double-play in the game (Robbie to Willie) but it ended the TWO on ONE out threat in the 7th
* James made a nice running catch in LCF

g58 | oh no, Erasmo ~ yessiree, BP and the bats!

Mariners 7 | Braves 5

ON the MOUND
Erasmo dug himself into a hole early, giving up TWO doubles and TWO homers so, despite pitching out of a bases-loaded jam in the 3rd, that would be his last inning
THREE innings ~ EIGHT hits ~ FIVE earned runs ~ ONE walk ~ FOUR strikeouts

BP was NAILS!
Tom + Dom + Danny + Nando = SIX scoreless innings, giving up only TWO hits, TWO walks and NINE strikeouts

AT the PLATE
Surprises abound in Hot-Lanta . . .
~ Stefen with a PINCH hit THREE-run homer (that tied the game at FIVE in the 4th
~ John with his FIRST homer as a Mariner (a TWO-run shot that put the M’s ahead for good in the 7th)
~ Brad and James with the other RBI’s
Plenty of hits (THIRTEEN) w/ a couple of stark contrasts . . .
~ Kyle and Justin = 0-10
~ Robbie and Michael = 5-10

IN the FIELD
* Brad-Robbie-Justin with a DP
* James with an error

g29 | another series win but, by the hair of their chinny-chin-chin!

chinny chin chin

What a series! The Astros continue to be pretty pesky . . .

All THREE games decided by ONE run (M’s lost the one that went to extras) and the M’s come away with their THIRD straight series win. Not a question that the M’s bullpen is a bit depleted but, perusing the box scores for the past three days, seems the M’s next opponent, the A’s, may be in a similar boat (and, they have an even longer flight). Should be an interesting battle coming up in Oakland . . .

Mariners 8 | Astros 7

ON THE MOUND
Brandon’s line not too pretty but, he does seem to be making progress and, he did get the win . . .
He walked a batter in the 1st, gave up a solo shot in the 2nd (his first homer allowed) and retired the side in order in the 3rd. It wasn’t until TWO outs into the 4th that he ran into REAL trouble – giving up a single and TWO more doubles (making it FIVE doubles in THREE starts) and TWO more runs. In the 5th, another lead-off homer but, he got through the inning and “kept ’em in it”, as they say. Seems like his strikeouts have been there every start, needs just a bit more control and a way to cut down on those doubles but, good to see him get through it . . .
FIVE  innings ~ SIX hits ~ FOUR earned runs ~ TWO walks ~ THREE strikeouts

} Tom posted TWO hitless/scoreless innings with TWO strikeouts. Dare we say “the Bartender is back”?
} Charlie has been struggling mightily of late, giving up THREE runs on THREE hits in his last TWO appearances (all without recording an out)
} Danny made it a bit interesting in the 8th . . .
giving up one of Charlie’s inherited runners to get the ‘Stros within TWO but, retired the side in order
AND in the 9th . . .
allowing a single and a ground rule double to get the ‘Stros within ONE w/ TWO outs and then he completed his SIX out SAVE with a strikeout ~ well-played Lord Farquhar!

AT THE PLATE
~ Every starting batter except Kyle and Dustin had at least ONE hit (and Ack walked a couple of times, scoring after one and earning an RBI with the other of the bases-loaded variety)
~ Nice top o’ the order as, Michael, Willie, Robbie and Corey combined for SEVEN hits, SIX RBI and FOUR runs (really nice to see Michael finding his groove in the lead-off spot and Willie contributing off the bench, which is what a journeyman should do)
~ And how ’bout John?!? THREE hits, including TWO doubles and an RBI (another vet off the bench doing his job admirably)
~ Nice to see those extra base hits! No homers today but, FOUR doubles and a triple

IN THE FIELD
* Tommy with a “self-preservation” catch of a line drive come-backer at his waist for the thrid out of the 7th

* Buck had a passed ball (but, no one scored, so we’ll give him a pass considering his offensive day)
* No DP’s turned today

g18 | spittin’ bristles in Miami . . .

It sure looked promising, with the M’s seeing their first lead of the series early on but, they despite multiple chances they could not add on and the bullpen couldn’t hold it late ~ oh, the road woes (1-6 . . .  blech!)

Mariners 2 | Marlins 3

rough road

ON THE MOUND
Brandon certainly surprised (me, at least!)
NO hits, faced the minimum and retired TEN in-a-row at one point through FOUR innings. Then came the 5th and with ONE out he gave up a couple of singles and a walk and after only 63 pitches, that was his day . . .
FOUR.ONE innings ~ TWO hits ~ ONE earned run ~ TWO walks ~ FOUR strikeouts

} Dominic took over in the 5th – got a punch out and a ground out to retire the side. Then, got TWO outs in the 6th but, allowed TWO base-runners
} Dominic + Joe + Danny = TWO.ONE innings of scoreless relief
} Charlie + Tom = 1.1 innings w/TWO earned runs and the lead lost

AT THE PLATE
Hey Brandon can bat!
1st ML AB = sac bunt to move Corey to 3B
2nd ML AB = line drive out (that Stanton made a great running shoestring catch on)
Manufacturing works . . .
first TWO runs were sac-flies – whatever it takes!
Best shot at breaking it open . . .
bases-loaded, TWO outs in the 7th – Kyle struck out 😦
all-in-all . . . ZERO for EIGHT w/RISP ain’t gonna cut it

IN THE FIELD
* Nice Nick-to-Robbie-to-Justin double-play to end the 1st
* Strong throw by Dustin to keep the tying run runner at 2B on a deep fly ball in the 8th
* Justin had to double-clutch after fielding a bases-loaded bunt – runner initially called OUT but, replay challenge ends in a SAFE ruling – which tied the game
* Corey continues to prove RF is not a problem for him – surgically repaired knees and all
