g162 | couldn’t have ended on a more down note

OK – I admit it. I attended a lot less games this season than in years past and these past few weeks have been more of a chore than a labor of love (especially with the distraction that is that team across the street that has captured everyone’s attention).

I’m sure that once Spring Training rolls around, my passion will be renewed. As for my posting, I’m going to aim for quality over quantity and try to provide more creative, opinion-based content. I’ll also have some year-end reflections in the next few days. In the meantime, here’s the last, sad recap . . .

Mariners 0 | Athletics 9

Erasmo didn’t just not have “it”, he didn’t have anything, he couldn’t even get out of the 2nd inning . . .
1-1 innings ~ THREE hits ~ FOUR earned runs ~ FOUR walks ~ THREE strikeouts

} and then there was Hector, who lasted a bit longer but, also gave up FOUR runs
} Bobby and Carter ended well, combining for 3.2 innings of scoreless ball
} Tom was his usual self of late, giving up a run on a couple of hits and a walk

Move along, nothing to see here. Only FIVE hits and none for extra bases (though Brad did have another multi-hit game)

No DP’s in the entire game and, since I didn’t actually watch or listen, can’t speak to any particular great/odd plays.

g160 | last Felix day, not so happy . . .

Mariners 2 | Athletics 8

Sort of a surreal feeling to this one, as prior to the game, it was reported that Eric Wedge would not return as manager next season (apparently, his decision). More on that later. Meanwhile, M’s have played the A’s tough all season – not so tonight.

Not exactly the way Felix wanted to end the season . . .
It was a “quality start” and after the rough 1st he was able to settle down but, he just threw WAY too many pitches (106!)
SIX innings ~ FIVE hits ~ THREE earned runs ~ ONE walk ~ SIX strikeouts

} and then there was Ollie, Carter, Lucas and Tom . . .
with their all too familiar collective ineffectiveness 😦

The bats continue to put up a good ratio of extra base hits but, when the TOTAL hits is only FOUR, doesn’t really matter that TWO of them were homers (Guti and Kendrys) – especially when they’re solo shots. Old Bartolo just shut ’em down.

Only ONE double-play and, another error for Nick 😦

g156 | victory salvaged amid the bees . . .

Mariners 3 | Angels 2

Great to see Felix back on the mound (after 20 days off) but, a rather strange outing . . .

FOUR innings ~ ONE hit ~ ONE earned run ~ FOUR walks ~ TEN strikeouts (in 92 pitches)

} Solid relief effort as Ollie, Carter, Charlie, Yoervis, Danny combined to give up only FOUR hits and ONE run, striking out FIVE over the next FIVE innings – Ollie picked up the win and Danny his 15th save.

~ Kendrys with TWO hits and a run scored – on Mike’s 2nd inning RBI double
~ Justin hit his 18th homer of the season with Kyle aboard in the 6th to give the M’s the 3-2 lead they would not relinquish.

Kyle with a SB and Carlos with an error (no DPs)

g154 | dueling youngsters, M’s blinked first

Mariners 2 | Angels 3 (in 11)

Erasmo was cruising along through SIX (as was Shoemaker) scattering a SIX hits and then came the 7th (where BOTH pitchers gave up their first TWO runs of the game). For Erasmo, they were both unearned, and given up by Chance after Erasmo left the game with a strained groin . . .
SIX innings ~ SIX hits ~ TWO unearned runs ~ ZERO earned runs ~ ONE walk ~ THREE strikeouts

} Lucas, Carter and Bobby managed to keep the Halos scoreless for another THREE full innings but, Bobby couldn’t hold it and gave up a couple of singles in the 11th, the last one coming with TWO outs and ONE on for the game-winning hit.

Multi-hit games from Michael (who had BOTH RBI), Dustin and Nick but . . . .
TWO runs usually not gonna do it and, tonight was no exception

* Kyle with another error
* THREE double-plays (all Dustin-Nick-Justin)

tweets of the game . . .

g151 | I sense a pattern here ~ M’s stuck on TWO, Tigers adding on . . .

Mariners 2 | Tigers 6

Brandon with one of his best starts of the season . . .
He needs to gain efficiency, as it took him 86 pitches to get through FIVE innings but, considering the competition, this was an extremely encouraging outing for Brandon.
FIVE innings ~ FIVE hits ~ TWO earned runs ~ TWO walks ~ SIX strikeouts

As for the bullpen . .  . blech!
the combination of Yoervis + Charlie + Carter = FOUR earned runs on FIVE hits and TWO walks. Bobby was the only effective one, striking out Fielder for the last out of the 8th

When your offense has FIVE extra base hits . . .
~ THREE doubles (Michael, Carlos, Kendrys)
~ ONE triple (Michael)
~ ONE home run (Raul’s 28th)
it SHOULD bode well. When they only have ONE other hit – it doesn’t 😦

NO DP’s, an error by Zunino, some lazy play and a bad throw – not exactly sterling today 😦

tweets of the game . . .

g149 | don’t bother to meet me in St Louie

Mariners 2 | Cardinals 12

Erasmo was far from sharp . . . .
never a good sign when your pitcher gives up more runs than innings pitched (and he also hit a couple of batters)
FOUR innings ~ EIGHT hits ~ FIVE runs ~ ZERO walks ~ ONE strikeout

Unfortunately, he was not alone in his “dullness” . . .
} Carter was no help (a common occurrence of late) . . . he faced THREE batters, retired NONE and gave up TWO runs
} Bobby gave up ONE run in his ONE inning
} Chance gave up THREE in his TWO
} Lucas was the sole effective pitcher – much too little, much too late

Sad story . . .
~ Abraham had the loan XBH (a double ) and a sac-fly to score Endy
~ Guti had an RBI single that scored Abraham

Dustin nailed at 2B by Molina (though, the reply appeared to show he was safe) . . .
losing track of the CS’s in this series – curious that they finally running when there’s a great catcher behind the plate 😦

g145 | b l o w n OUT

Mariners 2 | Astros 13

blown out

And so, for Joe, it turns out the first pitch of the ballgame was an omen of the evening. The solo shot in the first was followed by a an RBI double in the 2nd and THREE doubles, THREE steals and a single in the 3rd to score FOUR and that would be it . . .
THREE innings ~ SEVEN hits ~ SIX earned runs ~ ONE walk ~ FIVE strikeouts

} wow – a night were Tom was the ONLY pitcher that DIDN’T give up a run (TWO full innings of hitless/scoreless ball, in fact)
} Carter, Chance and Luke combined to give up TEN hits, SEVEN runs, FIVE walks and SIX strikeouts in FOUR innings

~ For the THIRD night in-a-row, only FIVE hits and at least ONE error
~ Raul’s double was the only extra base knock

* Abraham with another error 😦
* ZERO double-plays turned
* Man – can (and do!) those Astros run!!! (FIVE stolen bases – THREE of which ended up scoring)

g144 | oh Lordy . . .

Mariners 4 | Astros 6

Taijuan’s home debut (and his last start of the season) started out a bit shaky but finished very strong . . .
He loaded the bases in the 1st but was able to escape without damage. Then gave up a double that later scored on a sac-fly in the 2nd. Back-to-back doubles gave the Astros their second run in the 3rd. Then Taijuan settled in and retired the side in order in the 4th, 5th and 6th (FIVE via K) . . .
FIVE innings ~ TWO earned runs ~ ONE walk ~ EIGHT strikeouts

} Luke posted ONE scoreless, the 7th
} Carter made things a bit interesting in the 8th by allowing runners to 2B and 3B with only ONE out but, Charlie to the rescue – a strikeout and a ground out (really felt like the momentum would carry them through 😦
} Danny with his SECOND blown save since taking over as closer ~ it happens. He struck out the first batter on THREE pitches and then proceeded to walk the next TWO and ended up allowing FOUR runs (THREE earned) on RBI single, an error and a TWO-run single
} Bobby took over and allowed a single and then a bizzare  deal – Justin caught a foul pop-up and his throw to the plate hit the runner who was crouching in the line of fire and got hit – run scored from 3B

Once again, only FIVE hits but, at least this time a decent ratio of extra base hits . . .
~ Abraham’s FIRST homer in the bigs (he also had a double) was a TWO-run shot that gave the M’s a 3-2 lead at the time
~ Brad hit a solo shot in the bottom of the 9th – too little, too late after the nightmare top of the frame

THREE errors (all throws) one each by: Justin, Brad, Abraham and NO double-plays

tweets of the game . . .

g141 | spoilin’ the Rays

Mariners 6 | Rays 4

Definitely not one of Kuma’s stellar outings but, he kept ’em in it . . .
5.2 innings ~ EIGHT hits ~ THREE earned runs ~ TWO walks ~ FIVE strikeouts

} Yoervis bent, giving up a hit and a walk, but didn’t break in his 1.1. inning
} Ollie didn’t even record and out
} Carter got that rare distinction of the blown save AND the win for his ONE inning of work where he walked TWO and gave up TWO hits and a run
} Danny gave up a hit in the 9th but, recorded his THIRTEENTH save

Only EIGHT hits but nice that they were THREE for SEVEN w/RISP . . .
~ Justin with a TWO-run double
~ Nick and Kyle both with RBI singles in the same inning

And then there was Rauuuuuuul with his 27th homer (a solo shot) his second in as many games

* Nick and Guti both with steals
* Carter with a pick off (and Brad was picked off)
* Nice DP turned

tweets of the game . . .

g139 | Look, Ma . . . runs!

Mariners 6 | Royals 4

Taijuan got his second big league start . . .
Pitched the same number of innings as his first (which, of course are being monitored closely), gave up double the hits and quadruple the runs (but then it was the Royals compared to the Astros). The good news is, he is getting invaluable experience and learning under his belt. Great to see him bounce back in the 5th ~ retiring the side in order ~ after his rough 4th inning where he gave up all FOUR runs . . .
FIVE innings ~ FOUR hits ~ FOUR earned runs ~ TWO walks ~ TWO strikeouts

} the hitless/scoreless FOUR inning bullpen effort (Carter, Lucas and Danny) garnered a W for Lucas and an S for Danny (12th)

still only 2-12 w/RISP but, baby steps . . .
ELEVEN total hits (including doubles by Kendrys, Nick, Raul and Justin) and the homer by Kendrys that broke the tie in the 9th and became the eventual game-winning hit.

* Nice base-running by Dustin, getting to 1B on a very close play and then taking 2B on a bad throw
* Guti was CS
* Zero DP’s for either side
