g156 | didn’t see THAT coming . . .

Mariners 4 | Blue Jays 14

The shortest start of James’ career couldn’t have come at a worse time . . .
He gave up EIGHT earned runs tonight (after allowing only FIFTEEN in his other ELEVEN starts this season) and also broke his own league-leading streak of 142-batters faced without an extra-base hit (w/THREE allowed – TWO doubles and a triple)

TWO.TWO innings ~ SEVEN hits ~ NINE runs ~ EIGHT earned runs ~ SIX walks ~ ONE strikeout

} Brandon, Tom, Lucas, Danny and Joe combined for the remaining FIVE.ONE innings. The good news is, they didn’t walk anyone. The bad news is they gave up FIVE runs (FOUR earned) on NINE hits

FOUR is usually enough . . .
but, not tonight doubles by Robbie and LoMO and homers by Kyle and Chris D fell WAY short

a little of everything – good and bad . . .
* PB from Jesus
* error by Chris T
* an OFA by Chris D
* a double-play from Chris-to-Brad-to-Justin

g139 | apparently, the M’s were quite the danger to the Rangers, while the Hawks were ‘smacking the pack’

Yes, I admit to being fully distracted from the M’s game since I was actually AT the Seahawks game (I didn’t even check the M’s score once, as I had to turn my phone off to save battery). Needless to say, once I knew both outcomes, it was an even happier ride home on the link 😉

Mariners 10 | Rangers 2

Roenis had a nice outing . . .
the bad news, still only FIVE innings, the good news only 72 pitches (a low number for him)
FIVE innings ~ SEVEN hits ~ ONE earned run ~ ONE walk ~ ONE strikeout

All-in-all, the Rangers had TEN hits = NINE singles and a solo shot

} Danny gave up the solo shot in the 9th but, other than that, the combined relief of Dom, Brandon, Tom and Dany was spotless

Obviously, a good night for the hitters . . .
~ Austin, Robbie, Chris D and Jesus all with multi-hit games AND at least ONE hit and ONE RBI
~ Robbie led the pack w/FOUR RBI, Jesus w/TWO
~ Ack and both Chrises had multi-score games
~ Chris T walked THREE times

Not too shabby in this category either . . .
FOUR, count ’em FOUR double-plays!

g128 | comeback kids strike again for the series WIN!!!

whodathunk the M’s would win TWO games where they only scored in TWO of EIGHTEEN innings . . .

7 in 1

Mariners 7 | Red Sox 3

Mr. Young posted his shortest start since his second of the season . . .
he left with the bases full and a 7-3 lead but, would settle for a ND
THREE.TWO innings ~ SEVEN hits ~ THREE earned runs ~ FIVE walks ~ TWO strikeouts

} Tom ended up with the win and started off by striking out the first batter he faced  w/the bases loaded
} Charlie, Danny and Yourvis finished it up – all FOUR relievers combined for FIVE.ONE scoreless

Another CRAZY game where ALL the runs came in ONE inning, this time the 4th . . .
as well as SEVEN of their TEN hits:  FIVE singles (Kendrys, Kyle, Jesus, Chris T and Austin), ONE double (Chris D) and a THREE-run homer by Dustin

there were TWO errors (Ack throw, Austin fielding) and TWO double-plays

g127 | miracle in BeanTown

and I missed it 😦

We were on the first leg of a road trip to Lake Tahoe (Seattle to Medford) and while I was able to catch MOST of the game on AtBat, the signal wasn’t always strong and, we were trying to check in on the Seahawks as well (yes – it’s only preseason football but, they ARE our World Champs). Anyhoo – once we finally got to our hotel, as we were in line to check in, I glanced at some tweets – and then DOUBLE checked – they had rallied in the 9th for FIVE runs to win!

Mariners 5 | Red Sox 3

Felix went less than SIX innings for the second straight start . . .
the struggle was the pitch count (100 through FIVE) not the runs (scoreless through FIVE). Felix retired the side in order and only allowed a single, a double and a HBP to that point. But, then came the 6th where he allowed a double, both walks, and the THREE-run homer to Cespedes
FIVE.TWO innings ~ FIVE hits ~ THREE earned runs ~ TWO walks ~ SEVEN strikeouts

} Brandon, Dom (6th W) and Nando (37th S) combined for THREE.ONE scoreless innings

‘t was looking pretty bleak and I was beating my “playing down to the competition drum” . . .
~ M’s sent the min to the plate in the first THREE frames as, Endy’s single in the 3rd was wiped out by Brad’s DP
~ despite THREE walks and a HBP over the course of the 4th and 5th, no runs
~ a double and THREE more walks from the 6th thru the 8th resulted in still no runs

and then came the miracle 9th ~ THREE different batters had them down to their LAST strike
and, since I missed it all, best described by the video evidence . . .

ONE double play turned and THIS SPECTACULAR ranging play by

g123 | Good pitching beats good hitting . . .

. . . and good hitting beats mediocre pitching.

Pretty impressive that the M’s pitching was able to limit the high-scoring Tiggers to SEVEN runs in this series and consequently take TWO of THREE (who knows – if it weren’t for a silly, vindictive umpire, they could have pulled off a SWEEP!) and take a HALF-game lead on the second Wild Card spot as they head to Philly.

Mariners 8 | Tigers 1

Mr. Young, you are incredible!
2013 Baltimore Orioles Photo Day

  • Book-ended his start by retiring the side in order in the 1st and the 6th
  • Allowed a one-out double in the 2nd, one-out walk , TWO SB in the 3rd, one-out single in the 4th
  • Only real trouble came in the 5th when the first TWO batters singled and a ground ball out left runners at 1B and 3B w/ONE out but, TWO shallow fly ball outs and he escaped w/o damage

SIX innings ~ FOUR hits ~ ZERO runs/earned runs ~ ONE walks ~ FOUR strikeouts

Tom, Danny and Yourvis weren’t real sharp – they combined for FOUR walks in their THREE innings . . .
} Tom’s walk was interesting, as it resulted in Lloyd’s second ejection in as many games (Randazzo again – this time he threw him out from 3B!
} Danny’s walk ended up scoring as he allowed a double that drove the walker in
} Yourvis allowed TWO walks (w/ONE out) but, thankfully was saved by PBF (4-6-3 DP)

btw ~ the Tiggers TOP THREE ended up 0/10 today 🙂

Nice to see double-digit hits and advantage taken on Tigger miscues (FOUR runs were UNearned) . . .
~ only TWO extra-base hits – Chris T double, Chris D triple
~ great to see Chris D contributing – 3/5 with an RBI triple
~ Austin, Robbie, Kendrys and Kyle all with TWO hits
~ runs all throughOUT the line up and RBIs from the middle

M’s DEE was solid as usual, Tiggers not so much . . .
* Only ONE DP but, it ends the game (4-6-3)
* Tiggers had NO DPs and THREE errors that accounted for FOUR earned runs
* Davis stole THREE bases but, for naught

tweets of the game . . .

p.s. be interesting to see what, if any, action Mr. Torre takes on the “reports” ~ one filed after each of the last TWO games ~ re: Randazzo’s falderal

g117 | series win!

Mariners 4 | White Sox 2

3 out of 4

Erasmo cruised through FOUR (including inducing TWO DP’s) . . .
FOUR.ONE innings ~ FOUR hits ~ ZERO runs ~ ONE walk ~ TWO strikeouts
but, something about the pop-up, HBP and single to start the 5th didn’t sit right with Lloyd so, after only 66 pitches, he pulled him in favor of Dom – who promptly induced the M’s 3rd double-play to end the inning

} Dom went on to pitch ONE.TWO scoreless, including a pick off and, ultimately, get the W
} Tom gave up a solo shot in the 8th but, retired all SIX other batters he faced
} Nando induced TWO ground balls that found holes and the WS had TWO on w/NO out in the 9th . . .
he hit a batter and gave up another single but, NO runs and end up striking out the side, to earn his 33rd save and preserve the M’s 62nd victory

Not hard to pick the PoG today: Austin drove in ALL FOUR runs . . .
~ TWO-run double in the 2nd and an RBI single in the 7th
~ all FOUR runs were scored by batters 7, 8, 9
~ batters 2 – 4 went 0’fer but, good to see both Chrises w/ TWO hits each – Chris T extended his streak of at least ONE hit in each of his (now 12) starts (granted, one of his hits today was a ‘sun double’ – but, we’ll take it!)

* THREE more DP’s turn for the M’s (and TWO turned against them)
* Dustin makes all THREE put-outs in the 8th

tweets of the game . . .

g112 | FOUR is a magic number and Felix is . . . just plain magic

Mariners 4 | Braves 2

M’s are 42-10 when they score FOUR or more runs . . .
and yes, Felix should have at least FIVE more wins but, regardless, he is a JOY to watch and a DOUBLE joy to watch when he gets a lead 🙂

and that’s why they call him K’ing . . .

  • 1-2-3 in the 1st
  • a lead-off double and a single in the 2nd led to the Braves only run
  • a single and a walk in the 3rd are both stranded
  • and then, Felix would merely retire ELEVEN in-a-row (face the minimum in innings 4-8)

EIGHT innings ~ FOUR hits ~ ONE earned run ~ ONE walk ~ EIGHT strikeouts

} Nando made things a little interesting in the 9th – giving up a lead-off double that would eventually score but, in the end, earned his 31st save and preserving Felix’s 12 win and the M’s 58th victory

The Braves got their lone run in the 2nd, the M’s scored ALL FOUR of their runs in the 4th . . .
via a HBP (Kyle) THREE singles (Chris D, LoMo and Austin) and a TWO score on a fielding error of Chris T’s ball in play (Chris also had the M’s only extra base hit – a double in the 3rd). After that, a couple of walks and a single – luckily, they didn’t need more.

* Nice around-the-horn double play in the 7th
* Chris Taylor with a diving stop and a great throw for the third out in the 8th
