} Danny allowed a solo shot in the 7th and took the loss
} Tony, Joe and Mayckol combined for TWO scoreless

AT the PLATE

only FOUR total hits (Ketel’s homer the only one for extra bases)

IN the FIELD

ON the MOUND
Roenis was ON FIRE to start . . .
– He retired NINE in-a-row to start the game (w/SEVEN strikeouts – all swinging!!)
– He allowed his first hit in the 4th, a single, followed by a DP and a line out
– He allowed his first walk n the 5th but, got a strikeout and a couple of ground outs
But, then came the 6th, where Roenis seemed to not recover from an error . . .
– the first batter reached on the error
– the second and third walked
– a ground out scored a run and that would be it, still a pretty decent outing . . .
FIVE.ONE innings ~ ONE hit ~ TWO runs ~ ZERO earned runs ~ THREE walks ~ EIGHT strikeouts

Stellar job from the ‘pen . . .
Logan, Dave, Danny, Carson and Joe combined for:
THREE.TWO scoreless innings ~ THREE hits ~ ZERO walks  ~ SIX strikeouts

AT the PLATE
Only NINE total hits but, FIVE for extra bases . . .
~ Robbie, Jesus M, Guti all with solo shots
~ Nellie with a TWO-run homer (his career high 41st!)
~ Kyle with a double and TWO runs scored
~ John with a sac bunt squeeze that scored Sean (John’s first career RBI!)

IN the FIELD
* a nice Robbie ‘glove-flip DP
* Sean with a nice diving grab in the OF
* Roenis’ error

ON the MOUND
Not Roenis’ best effort (too many balls and too many pitches) but, he hung in  . . .
FIVE.ONE innings ~ FIVE hits ~ FOUR runs ~ FOUR walks ~ FOUR strikeouts

on the other hand, NICE bullpen tonight!
Mayckol gave up a couple of hits and a run but, the rest of the pen (Logan, Carson and Tom) combined for TWO hits ZERO runs and ZERO walks with FOUR strikeouts. Bartender earned his SEVENTH save and Logan is FIRST win (since 2009)

AT the PLATE
NINE total hits, THREE for extra-bases . . .
~ Guti, Mark and LoMo w/homers (Mark and LoMo’s were both TWO-run shots, LoMo’s a PH GW!)
~ Seth with a triple
~ Kyle and John (!) each with a stolen base, Robbie got caught
~ Guti on fire! besides the homer he walked and scored in Brad’s single and singled and scored on Mark’s homer

IN the FIELD
Not such a stellar defensive effort . . .
* John and Brad each with throwing errors
* No DPs turned but, TWO turned agains them

ON the MOUND
Kuma, in his first start at Safeco since the NoNo, was cruising along . . .
48 pitches, ONE hit and ZERO runs through the first FOUR and then came the 5th with 29 pitches and SEVEN runs – supposedly all earned as there were no errors but, there was certainly some sloppy, silly play that didn’t help 😦
FOUR.TWO innings ~ SEVEN hits ~ SEVEN runs ~ ONE walk ~ FOUR strikeouts

and then the pen . . .
} Edgar pitched ONE.ONE allowing only a hit and no runs
} Rob allowed a couple of hits and, unfortunately, an insurance run for the A’s
} Roenis (just recalled from AAA) appeared in his very first relief stint, allowed a walk but no runs
} Dave benefitted from a nifty line-out DP but then gave up THREE in the 9th

AT the PLATE
A barrage in the 3rd was pretty exciting . . .
~ Ketel doubled
~ Nellie HBP (kinda scary, hopefully just a bruised elbow)
~ RBI single by Robbie
~ Guti with a 3-run jack
~ a solo shot by Mark

IN the FIELD
* Nifty DP turned in the top of the 9th, back handed catch of a liner by Robbie and firing to Jesus to double up the runner
* Mark with a throwing error that led to a run
* Ironically, Mark made TWO of the THREE outs i the 5th but, had he properly fielded the first ball in the 5th, the A’s might not have any runs in that inning – instead, they scored FIVE.

ON the MOUND
Roenis had trouble in the 1st giving up TWO runs (on THIRTY-ONE pitches) . . .
But then, so great to see him settle down and retired TWELVE in-a-row before giving up a solo shot in the 5th
Another quality start that definitely gave the team a chance to win, the bats just couldn’t come through
SIX innings ~ THREE hits ~ THREE earned runs ~ ONE walk ~ SEVEN strikeouts

} Tom gave up the fourth run (an RBI triple) and Joe pitched a scoreless 8th

AT the PLATE
Not much to see here . . .
only TWO hits ~ both by Guti (a single and a double) and NO walks

IN the FIELD
* no DP’s (but one turned against them

prior to the game, Willie Bloomquist was DFA’d and Chris Taylor was recalled from AAA Tacoma . . .

ON the MOUND
Roenis’s second really rough start in three turns . . .
THREE.TWO innings ~ FIVE hits ~ SEVEN runs/earned runs ~ ONE walk ~ TWO strikeouts

} Vidal wasn’t bad – giving up ONE run in THREE.ONE innings in relief of Roenis
} Tom and Joe each posted a scoreless frame

AT the PLATE
NINE total hits ~ all singles . . .
(Guti’s back!!)

IN the FIELD
THREE beautiful DP’s but, all for naught 😦

ON the MOUND
Roenis bookended his start by allowing homers on the first pitch of the game and his last pitch of the game . . .
but, everything in-between was pretty great!

https://twitter.com/SteveSandmeyer/status/612114047702429696

at one point retired TWELVE in-a-row 🙂
SEVEN innings ~ FOUR hits ~ TWO earned runs ~ ZERO walks ~ TEN strikeouts

AT the PLATE
Only a total of EIGHT hits but, also SEVEN walks . . .
~ SIXTEEN opportunities w/RISP (OK – only came through THRICE but, ‘t was enough!)
~ it all started with LoMo being called SAFE w/ONE in the 1st out on a call that was reviewed and he would end up scoring the first run on a bases loaded walk
~ despite only ONE hit, Mark posted THREE RBI
~ good to see Kyle, Nellie (both had been suffering from food poisoning) and Robbie (out yesterday with ‘cough-cough’ a sore back) wasting no time contributing

IN the FIELD
No DP’s turned (though one turned against them)
‘stros have some great defensive players but, M’s were able to take advantage of a error

Just a sad day all ’round 😦

balloon deflated

ON the MOUND
A rare struggle for Roenis (but, join the club, seems nearly everyone struggles vs. these ‘stros)
after throwing THIRTY-THREE pitches and giving up THREE runs in the 1st, he needed only NINE pitches for a 1-2-3 2nd – you thought maybe, just maybe, he could hold ’em there but ‘t was not to be . . .
THREE.ONE innings ~ SEVEN hits ~ EIGHT runs ~ SEVEN earned runs ~ FOUR walks ~ TWO strikeouts

the bullpen didn’t fair any better . . .
} Danny gave up TWO runs (and was sent back to AAA after the game)
} Mark, Charlie and Carson each gave up ONE run
} Nando gave up a walk (the Astros had SEVEN total) but, was the only pitcher not to allow a run – go figure!

AT the PLATE
After the early onslaught yesterday, it seemed like they might have found something . . .
clearly not – at least not permanently (though it does seem as if there were quite a few very hard hit balls that were run down by the outfield)
~ a double for AJ, a single for Kyle
~ FIVE walks but, zilch across the plate  (

IN the FIELD
Kyle with a costly error in the 1st and a PB by Jesus
