- Nice to know Iwakuma will continue to be part of the M’s rotation
- In the ultimate addition by subtraction move… Chone Figgins released!
- Earlier this month, the M’s traded Trayvon Robinson to the O’s for Robert Andino then non-tendered him and re-signed him the same day

g118 | dousing the Rays
Way for Kevin to bounce back from his last start and from that first inning…
he scattered EIGHT hits in SEVEN innings, gave up ONE walk and TWO runs and K’d EIGHT
In the post game show, Shannon pointed out a fun fact…
KW was down 3-0 with THREE different hitters with RISP – and he STRUCK ’em ALL OUT!
Stephen Pryor was none too shabby himself…
the only hit he allowed in 1-2 innings was a lead-off double and then proceeds to strikeout the next two and get a fly ball for the third out.
Moore had been holding left handers to a .176 average but…
Ackley was able to pound out THREE hits
Seager had two hits and scored a run
Smoak (just recalled from Tacoma due to Carp’s injury) lined a double in his first AB
And, in the 9th, vs. the best closer this season…
-Seager singles
-Figgy pinch hits for Wells (who had K’d 3x) and lays down a bunt to move the runner but, Pena makes a bad throw and Figgy ends up on 2B and Seager on 3B
-Smoak hits a sac-fly scoring Seager to tie the game and Figgy gets to 3B
-Olivo strikes out
-Thames (after striking out 3x) singles on a 1-2 count, Figgy scores….

g116 | Viva la Vargas and Montero Mash ~ what a battery!
Lots to love ’bout Jason’s performance today…
-EFFICIENT – only 96 pitches to get through 8.1 innings
-EFFECTIVE – at one point, retired 13 in-a-row and faced the minimum in FIVE innings
-the only negative “EFF” was in the 3rd when he loaded the bases on scattered singles but got out of it via a strikeout of Kendrick.
And then there was the other side of the battery who provided most of the O…
Jesus with not ONE but TWO homers!
Good for THREE of the FOUR runs!
AND off a right-hander AND, not just your average rightie, we’re talkin’ Jared freaking Weaver!
In fact, TWELVE of Jesus’s last THIRTEEN hits have been off righties. Pro-gress.

A bit of a switch-er-roo in the bottom of the SIXTH…
when one of the patented “Carp stretches” – that always looks painful – actually was. Figgy pinch hit for Mike (and got a hit!) and then stayed in the game at 3B, Seager moved to 2B and Ackley shifted to 1B. Later, Chone hit an RBI triple scoring Jaso (who had walked) to give the M’s the 4-1 lead that would hold up for Jason’s THIRTEENTH victory and the “new daddy” Bartender’s SIXTEENTH save.
KEY dp in the 8th…
even with the defensive switch – Seager to Ryan to Ackley
g82 | wait, what? M’s score runs … at home?!?
Lots of interesting, fun stuff tonight!
Hisashi Iwakuma, made his major league starting debut…
a decent outing, though he surly would like one pitch back – that would be the one to Chris Davis that ended up in the seats and enabled three runs to score. Iwakuma gave up those three runs as well as three walks but he also struck out four and threw 71 pitches (a good amount, considering his highest pitch count in long relief was 65)

* Frst time ever that a major league starting lineup included THREE Japanese players
![]() |
Ben VanHouten | Seattle Mariners |
The old adage of “hitting is contagious” came to fruition tonight…
Seager was the lone sad-sac – he and Ichiro were the only ones without at least one hit but, Ichiro walked and scored a run.
* Figgy still in the lineup – and, surprisingly, not sucking! He’s made some nice defensive plays AND contributed, again, with the bat (Saunders still recovering from the flu)
Truly a little bit of everything tonight…
-the first run was text book get ’em ON (Figgy single) get ’em OVER (Kawasaki bunt) get ’em ON (Ryan single)

-the next three runs came in one fell swoop – a bases-clearing, 2-out double for Casper Wells
-the last two runs were of the back-to-back JACK variety, courtesy Olivo and Ackley

Hope ’bout that ‘pen?!?
FOUR innings of HITLESS, SCORELESS relief with SIX strikeouts – thank you…
-Mr. Delebar ~ earned the win in his first appearance back from AAA Tacoma
-Mr. Kelley ~ earned the hold
-Mr. Wilhelmsen ~ earned his SEVENTH save
Felix Day tomorrow!
g80 | 9th on Thursday, 11th on Saturday
wow – what a difference a day makes!
Erasmo was cruising…
no hits and 2 strikeouts in through 2-2, but then he had to come out of the game after leaping to catch a liner and throwing to first for the out.
Enter Charlie Furbush…
and then
Lucas Luetge
and then
Brandon League
and then
Oliver Perez
and then
Tom Wilhelmsen
and then
Shawn Kelley
EIGHT and ONE-THIRD innings of relief that allowed only ONE earned run
and the hitting stars?
the usual … John Jaso doubled in the 6th score both Ichiro (on via hit) and Casper (on via walk)
the UNusual … Dustin Ackley reached on a single in the 11th and then got to 3B via a single by Miguel Olivo and then SCORED via a sac-fly by Chone Figgins!!!

And now, the chance to take the series!
g68 | frolicking on Father’s Day!
Definitely one of the best games all season!
Despite a little issue in the first inning (which had him throwing so many pitches, I wasn’t sure he would make it through FIVE, let alone SEVEN) Felix appears to be back on track…
7 IP – 7H – 1ER – 1BB – 7K … that’s the type of Felix line we are used to!
Once again, the ‘pen came through…
though they showed their “bend but don’t break” side as opposed to their “lock-down” version.
~ League gave up a couple of hits but got through 8th unscathed thanks, in part, to a great play by Smoak on a Sanchez ground out.
~ In the 9th, Wilhelmsen loaded the bases (with one out) on a single and back-to-back walks but then got Cabrera to strike out and the pinch hitter, Schierholtz, to ground out to … Smoak.
And, we still had a tie, until Justin (having already helped with the glove) came through with the bat…
Seager and Montero hit back-to-back singles and were replaced by pinch runners Figgins and Kawasaki respectively. Saunders muffed a bunt and Figgy was thrown out at 3B and then, Justin came up with the hit that would garner him a shaving cream pie…
Awesome! And, even better than I got to see it all in person … with my dad!
Happy Father’s Day!!!
At least the homestand from hell ended on a good note…
whodathunk the M’s would be swept by the Pads and take the series from the Giants?
Oh, and how sweet is this?!?

g63 | rusty felix, prolific Pads, injured Pryor and moves coming
FELIX
Missed a start due to a back issue and not sure if his struggles tonight against the Padres have to do with continue issues or what but, he was anything but Felix like. Skip mentioned that he actually looked strong and healthy so … maybe just a little rusty?

PRYOR
Speaking of injuries … Stephen suffered some sort of groin pull in the 9th. He got the first batter to pop out and then was attempting to beat the second batter to the bag when he suffered the injury. Severity unknown – MRI tomorrow
AWESOME PLAY IN THE TOP OF THE 9th
Not that it really mattered at this point in the game but, it was still a nice play. Furbush had replaced the injured Pryor and had walked a batter an allowed a couple of stolen bases, so there were runners at 2B and 3B with one out. He recorded a strikeout but, the ball got passed Miggy – he was able to field it and throw from his knees to Charlie at home plate who tagged out the runner (in PLENTY of time) trying to score from 3B. Anyhoo, it was a nice recovery from a very shaky start to the inning.
SAUNDERS KEEPS ON HITTING
3 more hits tonight (including a double and a homer) have his BA up to .281 (not too shabby considering when the left on the last road trip is was about .224). Oh, he also stole THRID base
AND, IN THE BOTTOM OF THE 9th
A miracles a l m o s t occurred. Though, as they say, almost only counts in horse shoes.
Saunders hit a solo shot with one out, Figgy doubled and then Kawasaki and Ichiro each hit singles to get the game within TWO with ONE out. Then a strikeout to Ackley and a wild pitch by Street got the game to within ONE run – then, Montero grounded out.
WEDGE WAS A BIT LATE TO THE POST GAME
Apparently, the injury to Pryor (and maybe that was just the “straw”) is about to trigger “a series of moves”. Shannon reported seeing goodbyes being said to Beavan and Liddi and also mentioned that Carp has not been 100% and could be headed to the DL
Could be an interesting morning tomorrow…
g60 | it takes a village to throw a no-no
ZERO as in…
ZERO runs AND ZERO hits!!!
The Mariners recorded the THIRD no-hitter in their history by recording the TENTH “combined” no-hitter in Major League Baseball HISTORY!!!
(unfortunately, due to a social engagement, I missed most of the game – in fact, watched from the time Millwood had to come out of the game)
Congratulations to…
Kevin Millwood
Charlie Furbush
Stephen Pryor
Lucas Luetge
Brandon League
Tom Wilhelmsen
Congratulations to…
Jesus Montero ~ who was the “glue” between the SIX ~ man, was he excited, and rightly so!

Congratulations to…
Chone Figgins and Brendan Ryan ~ without their spectacular defensive plays in the 8th and 9th we may not even be talking about a win, let alone a no-hitter
Congratulations to…
Ichiro Suzuki ~ who had one of the few hits AND stole a money bag to get into SP with 2-outs and ended up scoring the winning (and only) run
![]() |

Congratulations to…
Kyle Seager ~ with yet ANOTHER 2-out RBI hit (he leads the majors in that category with 21)

g52 | hmmm… something seemed to click
Who ARE these guys??
stringing together hit after hit after hit to score EIGHT runs in ONE inning?!?
let me just copy/paste from Yahoo! because it was such a beautiful thing…
– J. Jaso singled to right, K. Seager scored, J. Smoak to second |
– B. Ryan safe at first on shortstop E. Andrus’ fielding error, J. Smoak scored, J. Jaso to third, M. Saunders to second |
– D. Ackley singled to shallow right, J. Jaso scored, M. Saunders to third, B. Ryan to second |
– M. Carp singled to right, M. Saunders scored, B. Ryan to third, D. Ackley to second |
– I. Suzuki hit sacrifice fly to shallow right center, B. Ryan scored |
– D. Ackley scored, C. Figgins to third on wild pitch |
Ackley, Seager, Jaso and Saunders all with multiple hit nights (Jaso with a 2-run homer to get things started in the 2nd)
Yes, their were some Ranger errors and miscues but, taking advantage of those is all part of the game.
There were also some pretty fancy plays on the M’s side of the ledger, like this DP with the bases loaded and only one out… video
I’m thinking Mr. Ryan et al, may have been treated to a nice Texas steak dinner by Mr. Vargas 🙂
Seriously though, Vargas pitched very well ….
SIX+ innings and only THREE runs (a 3-run shot by Hamilton) on FIVE hits
pretty outstanding line against this powerhouse – well done, Jason!
and the BP of Kelley, Luetge and Wilhelmsen added TWO+ scoreless
If they can take the series tomorrow, it’s a great start to the road trip, as series win AND a season series tie with the R’s … stranger things have happened, right?
g23 | gettin’ ’em ON, not gettin’ ’em IN…
Figgy and Miggy go yard…
Seemed like a good omen in the first when Figgins hit his second homer of the season

but, despite double trouble…
Ackley, Saunders, Seager, Jaso all with doubles
the M’s could go no where with runners on…
coming into this game, the M’s ranked 4th in the AL w/RISP but, put up an 0 fer again today (going 0/22 the last two games)
