g109 | THREE in the 1st? so what!

IMG_6040

Every year, I’m so captivated by the Opening Day ceremony, there’s always a point where I realize. “wow, we still get to watch a baseball game!”. That realization was ten-fold tonight, as Griffey’s Number Retirement Ceremony was the ceremony to end all ceremonies (see post dedicated to that here )

Mariners 8 | Angels 6

trout

OK, how weird was that?!?
Trout w/ a THREE-run home run for the second straight game . . .
but, M’s made it moot 🙂

ON the MOUND
Unlike Felix the previous night, Tai (just off the DL) wasn’t able to get deep . . .
He failed to strike out at least one batter for the first time in his career and FOUR of the SEVEN hits he allowed were for extra-bases.
FOUR innings ~ SEVEN hits ~ SIX earned run ~ TWO walks ~ ZERO walks

But, Yay, for the Bully!

Cody, Drew, Tom and Eddy combined for FIVE scoreless innings . . .

  • Cody especially impressive, going TWO.TWO, allowing only TWO hits, NO walks
  • w/the weird way they score wins, Drew gets it, despite only facing ONE batter
  • Tom looked great, striking out TWO of the THREE batters he faced
  • Eddy earned his FOURTH save (though he’s slackin’ – didn’t K a batter 😉 )

AT the PLATE
TEN total hits including THREE homers and TWO doubles . . .

  • great to see Guti getting going – triple short of the cycle!
  • Guillermo’s FIRST major league homer
  • and, the big blast by, of course, Shawn O’Malley 🙂

(btw ~ I really did say “Do it for Jr!” Right before Shawn hit the homer to take the lead 🙂 )

IN the FIELD

Sparkling DEE tonight! Including THREE double-plays and TWO of the home run heros each turn around and make GREAT plays in the field the next half inning . . .

  • Guillermo w/ a nice running grab in left and a throw to double the runner off 1B
  • Shawn with a great snare and a “I don’t know how he did that” cross-body throw to get the runner at 1B (after which, a spontaneous chant of “Shawn O’Malley!” broke out)

Mariners 5 | Pirates 2

Mariners 1 | Pirates 8

Thankfully, I attended the win and it was a beautiful night out for baseball!

Started in the upper deck . . .

Stayed till sunset . . .

IMG_5727

then ventured down . . .

Kuma was the old Kuma . . .
SIX.TWO innints ~ SIX hits ~ TWO earned runs ~ ONE walk ~ FOUR strikeouts

Edwin and Steve took it the rest of the way . . .
allowing only combined hit. Steve recorded his EIGHTEENTH save, preserving Kuma’s SEVENTH victory.

The bats went batty!

  • TWELVE hits including TWO doubles (Ketel & Kyle) & a MONSTER 2-shot by Nellie
  • each starter except Guti and Chris had at least ONE hit
  • Guti had ONE of only TWO walks and scored
  • Robbie and Kyle each had THREE hits

Nice plays in the field . . .
Despite an error by Dae-Ho, TWO double plays and a nice OF assist from Leonys

Mariners Win!!!

And, we won’t talk about the next night 😦

g76 | bristles beyond the grasp . . .

Mariners 6 | Cardinals 11

elusive

ON the MOUND
James’ first inning may have been a bit of an omen for the rest of the game . . .
He allowed a lead-off triple and then a ground rule double, a walk, a couple of strikeouts and a fly out – so, he was lucky to get out of the inning allowing just ONE run. He then scattered a couple hits/walks over the next TWO innings, had a 1-2-3 4th but, the 5th would be his undoing: after striking out the lead-off batter, he allowed THREE straight doubles and THEN a TRIPLE – ugh.
FIVE innings ~ EIGHT hits ~ FIVE earned runs ~ TWO walks ~ SEVEN strikeouts

the bully was no better . . .
Only Dave Rollins (who struck out the only batter he faced) had success.
Donn, Nick, Edwin and Vidal combined for THREE.TWO innings and SIX earned runs

AT the PLATE
on the surface, it sounded like a successful day – TWELVE hits and SIX runs
~ including FOUR doubles (Dae-Ho, Shawn, Robbie and Nellie)
~ TWO homers (Nellie’s solo shot to extend a lead & Guit’s 3-run shot to tie it at SIX)

But, the early lead and the late comeback were overwhelmed by the Cards SIX homers in FOUR innings 😦

IN the FIELD
* Chris w/a passed ball and Kyle w/a fielding error
* Guti with an extra base hit robbery at the wall

g69 | oh, those one-run losses . . .

soooo, close . . .

this close

Mariners 1 | Red Sox 2

ON the MOUND
Good news: Tai’s first ever start in Fenway was great while it lasted
Bad news: lifted after only 88 pitches when the foot strain flared up again
FIVE innings ~ SIX hits ~ ZERO runs ~ ONE walk ~ THREE strikeouts

Bully . . .
} Vidal gave up a couple of singles and the tying run in the 6th
} Edwin gave up the ultimate winning run (solo shot to Betts) in the 7th
} Nick allowed a hit and a walk but, no runs – all too little, too late 😦

AT the PLATE
~ Only EIGHT total hits (and Guti’s solo shot the only one for extra-bases)
~ ZERO walks and TEN strikeouts – typically not a recipe for success
~ tip o’ the cap to Mr. Price

IN the FIELD
* a nice DP to get Ortiz w/TWO on to end the 3rd
* Nice throw by Chris to nail Betts (for the first time this season
* Ketel with a low liner snare with the bases loaded to end the 6th

tweets of the game . . .

g67 | Guti, Guti ~ have a day!

starting fast and adding on . . .

addon

Mariners 8 | Red Sox 4

ON the MOUND
Kuma solid, just shy of quality (one too many runs, though one more inning)
SEVEN innings ~ NINE hits ~ FOUR earned runs ~ ONE walk ~ FOUR strikeouts

Bully nicely done . . .
Dave Rollins back for a bit and Steve w/his SIXTEENTH save

AT the PLATE
M’s bats were none too kind vs. their old pal Elias . . .
~ especially Guti – SIX rbi in FOUR innings (TWO homers and a bases-clearing double)
~ nice patience throughout the line up (SIX walks)
~ Robbie w/his NINETEENTH homer (most ever as an AL 2nd baseman)

IN the FIELD
* TWO dp’s turned, both: Kyle-to-Robbie-to DaeHo
* Ketel with his 10th error 😦

g52-53 | M’s take the ‘Vedder Cup’ in crazy fashion . . .

vedder_cup_logo__original__by_taliaspadre-d5l6cak

g52 Mariners 6 | Padres 14

Scoring SIX runs should by indicative of a win but, unfortunately, James (subbing for Felix who’s now on the DL with a calf strain) had a rough 2016 debut. He didn’t even survive the 4th and made a costly error that contributed to a SIX run 1st inning for the Padres.

The bullpen wasn’t much help – Joel and Steve each allowed FOUR hits and THREE runs! (and, Joel found himself DFA’d after the game)

The good news was: Kyle, Robbie, Nellie and Guti all stayed HOT, HOT, HOT (even Luis had a couple of hits!)

g53 Mariners 16 | Padres 13

You think the score is crazy? Wait till you hear how they got there!!!

THE biggest come-back in Mariners organization HISTORY!

Down 12-2 in the going into the 6th, the M’s proceeded to score FIVE in the 6th and NINE in the 7th to seal what would become one of the craziest wins ever (luckily, I got home just as the 7th inning started so, got to witness history, at least via TV). Obviously, not a lot of pitching on either side (Miley w/his worst M’s start) but, the ‘new guy’, Cody Martin gets the victory for the M’s

I’ll let some tweets tell the story . . .

g50-51 | mini-sweep (whisk?)

Would have been nice to get some of this pitching and hitting in the Twins series but, we’ll take it! In the mini two-game sweep, M’s outscored the Padres 25-7

whisk

g50 Mariners 9 | Padres 3

ON the MOUND
Nate  a  l  m  o  s  t  made it through SEVEN . . .
the Padres scored early but, they didn’t score often
SIX.TWO innings ~ EIGHT hits ~ TWO earned runs ~ ONE walk ~ SIX strikeouts

Bully . . .
Steve, Joaquin and Joel combined for the rest (Joel allowed a ONE run shot)

AT the PLATE
The M’s didn’t score early but, they did score often . . .
~ NINE total hits – FIVE for extra bases
~ Seth w/TWO doubles
~ Kyle and Dae-Ho w/homers

IN the FIELD
* couple of errors – one each by the starting battery
* DP turned (DH-O’Malley-DH)

g52 Mariners 16 | Padres 4

ON the MOUND
Kuma was perfect through FOUR, not allowing his first hit until a lead-off single in the 5th. He managed to get out of that inning unscathed but, later allowed THREE homers before his outing ended . . .
SEVEN innings ~ FIVE hits ~ FOUR earned runs ~ ZERO walks ~ FIVE strikeouts

Bully . . .
Vidal and Monty combined for TWO scoreless innings 🙂

AT the PLATE
lots to smile about here . . .
~ every starter had at least ONE hit except Robbie (who walked THREE times)
~ FIVE starters had multiple hits (Nori, Seth, Nellie, Kyle, Adam)
~ FIVE homeruns (Kyle, Seth (2), Guti, Adam)
~ TEN walks
~ 5/8 w/RISP
~ odd – no doubles

IN the FIELD
ONE double-play (Kyle-Luis-Adam)

g33 | notchin’ another series win!

Mariners 6 | Rays 4

M’s jumped out to an early lead and added on significantly. The Rays chipped away and got close but, the home town nine hung in there 🙂

ON the MOUND
Wade was j u s t shy of a QS . . .
SIX innings ~ FOUR hits ~ FOUR earned runs ~ ONE walk ~ SIX strikeouts

The Bully was its usual stellar self . . .
with Nick, Vidal, Joel and Steve combining for THREE scoreless innings (and, Steve recorded his ELEVENTH save – a FOUR out variety!)

AT the PLATE
~ Every starter but one (Luis) had at least ONE hit
~ Nice to see another couple homers (Guti’s first, DeaHo’s fifth)
~ and even better that there were BASERUNNERS when they occurred

IN the FIELD

and they say Nellie can’t play the field . . .

tweets of the game . . .

g10 | road SWEET road!

Mariners 7 | Yankees 1

on the road, thankfully, again 🙂

road love

ON THE MOUND
Nate IN and OUT of trouble . . .
obviously, too many walks but, the solo shot in the first was the only XBH against him and that “getting out” part gives him a little grit factor 😉
FIVE innings ~ FIVE hits ~ ONE earned run ~ FOUR walks ~ SEVEN strikeouts

Bully back to form . . .
Tony, Joel, Vidal and Monty combining for FOUR innings only ONE hit and ZERO runs

Nice to see the Yanks with “Mariner-itis” (ZERO for TWELVE w/RISP)

AT THE PLATE
Lots to like here! (as @Gary Hill would say 🙂 )
~ first double-digit hit game (12) since the last two games in the opening series in Texas
~ only the third game the M’s have scored more than THREE
~ FOUR extra-base hits (THREE doubles and a homer)
~ Robbie, Nellie, Adam and Chris all with multi-hit games
~ more walks than K’s (when does THAT happen?)
~ in fact, the fewest strikeouts (THREE) for the M’s in a game so far this season
~ Seth and Guti shared the DH spot tonight (Guti getting over the effects from the flu) and combined for ONE run, TWO hits, TWO rbi and ONE walk
~ Chris with THREE hits, including a TWO-run homer
~ Ketel with his first SB
~ Kyle REALLY starting   s   l   o   w   (he’ll get it turned around though!)

IN THE FIELD
} couple of nice catches in the outfield and fine plays in the infield
} no errors (but the Yanks had one)
} no DP’s turned (though the Yanks turned THREE ;-( )

g1 | Opening Day in Arlington

Mariners 2 | Rangers 3

So, after ONE game .  . .

  • Felix gave up FIVE walks and took the loss
  • all but THREE M’s batters are hitless (Sardinas doesn’t count, since he didn’t play)
  • Iannetta is batting 1.000
  • the M’s commit TWO errors Seager and Marte (accounting for TWO unearned runs)
  • the Rangers have only ONE hit
  • the M’s have TWO homers (Seager and Cano)
  • Monty has yet to post an earned run average

Something tells me, pacing this trajectory would be serious folly (seriously crazy game)
