the stand out from this series (unfortunately) was this play that WOULD have been a THREE-run homer for Jesus M but, Trout got in the way . . .

I attended the last game – a fun one!

Kuma was awesome . . .
he was only able to make it through SIX innings but, FOUR hits ~ ONE earned run ~ ZERO walks ~ NINE strikeouts

The bullpen has been out of this world in September and meeting the Halos was no different . . . .
ZERO runs allowed in this series!

The unlikely hero of the night was Jesus . . .
THREE-run bomb in the 4th – and that would be that 🙂

Plus, a couple of extras . . .
~ some fireworks between Weaver and Seager
~ AND Hyphen working some TV 🙂

errors

Yes, the Halos won in a blow-out but . . .
the defense (great on the Halos part and dismal on the M’s part) played a HUGE part.

ON the MOUND
Tai far from sharp but, in his defense, neither was his defense . . .
Halos first THREE runs scored via:  error by Robbie, WP by Tai, error by Mark
and then things REALLY fell apart in the 6th . . .
Tai added his own error for the Halos fourth run on a sequence that was none too pretty: HBP, single, sac bunt (with the error, so all safe and a run scores), 2-run double and that would be the end of Tai’s day and the end of his first half . . .
FIVE innings ~ SEVEN hits ~ SEVEN runs ~ SIX earned runs ~ ZERO walks ~ SEVEN strikeouts

} Enter Dave who promptly allows a single, a ground out RBI, and a 2-run homer, a single and a walk
} Danny comes in and is able to FINALLY get the last TWO outs of the 6th (Trout flies out and Pujols pops up) and holds the Halos scoreless in the 7th, despite a couple of singles
} Nando gets some work in, allowing run via a lead-off double and a couple of ground outs
} Carson allowed a hit in the 9th but retired the side w/o further damage (including TWO K’s)

AT the PLATE
Despite the hit total, going down 1-2-3 in the 1st, 6th and 7th, they had their chances . . .
~ Kyle w/ a lead-off double in the 1st, Brad w/a lead-off single in the 2nd – both erased
~ Robbie hit a ROCKET at ’em ball which Pujols turned the unassisted DP w/o effort 😦
~ and, of course Aybar and Trout saved a couple runs/extra base hits, as per usual
~ good news: AJ, Brad and Kyle all with multi-hit games and Seth with a pinch hit homer

IN the FIELD
comedy of errors and a WP lead to the Halos first FOUR runs. . .
* Robbie fielding (first)
* Tai WP (second)
* Mark throwing (third)
* Tai throwing (fourth)

g88 | KKKKKKuma’s back with No Halos at Home

Mariners 5 | Angels 0

no halos at home

ON the MOUND
Kuma looked as if he wouldn’t be long for the game, loading the bases w/NO outs in the 1st but . . .
he escaped that and then settled in – looking like the The Bear of old (only TWO more reached base in his next SEVEN innings)
EIGHT innings ~ THREE hits ~ ZERO runs/earned runs ~ TWO walks ~ SIX strikeouts

} Mark just with his requisite scoreless innings and 1+ K’s (can’t get over what a rejuvenation he’s had!)

AT the PLATE
Runners on in EVERY inning but the 1st and 6th . . .
~ NINE total hits w/TWO doubles
~ believe it or not, the top of the order (AJ, Guti, Robbie) were O ‘fer
~ but, 4-5-6 (Nellie, Kyle, Mark) made up for them: going 7/8 w/FIVE runs scored, FOUR walks and TWO rbi
~ both pinch hitters got a hit (Seth and LoMo) and LoMo w/an RBI as well

Mariners 3 | Angels 7

pattern

I doubt I’m the only one sensing a pattern here . . .

ON the MOUND
Well, I guess it was bound to happen – a sub par outing for Monty 😦
Started out promising, even though he threw 20 pitches in the 1st, he was able to get out of trouble (with a lot of help from his DEE) and then posted a 1-2-3 in the 2nd

After that, it was all down hill . . .
FIVE innings ~ EIGHT hits ~ FIVE runs ~ ZERO walks ~ THREE strikeouts

} Danny didn’t help much, giving up a 2-run homer to Cron (his second of the game) on the first pitch he threw in the 7th and then a lead-off homer to Trout (his second as well) in the 8th before retiring the rest of the batters in order
} Joe and Vidal post a combined TWO scoreless innings

AT the PLATE
NINE total hits . . . .
~ including FOUR doubles (Kyle, Robbie, Guti, Ack)
~ and a homer (Mark)
~ Jesus got a hit in his 2015 debut!
~ Mark continues his hot streak
~ Guti and Ack both with TWO hits
Normally, that would be considered a nice, productive game but, it paled in comparison to the night before and, more importantly to the Halos production tonight. At least they tried to make it a bit exciting: Mark’s homer didn’t come until the bottom of the 9th (w/Kyle aboard via HBP and no outs).

But too little, too late. At least I thoroughly enjoyed my crab sandwich . . .

IN the FIELD
* Kyle made a nice play to get Calhoun hung up between 3B and home w/one out in the 1st
* Chris had an unfortunate error, what seemed a sure DP ended up not even getting ONE out
* Robbie made a beautiful shoe-top snare near the bag at 2B for the second out of the 6th
* Good to see Jesus able to stretch and dig a bit at 1B
* Despite his recent pitching struggles, Danny still fields his position well – nice play on a chopper down the 1B line and toss to Jesus for the second out of the 7th

bats

goin’ batty!

ON the MOUND
Felix being Felix 🙂

SEVEN innings ~ TWO hits ~ ZERO runs/earned runs ~ TWO walks ~ SIX strikeouts

Nando, Vidal and Danny being Nando, Vidal and Danny 😦
they combined for THREE hits, TWO walks, TWO runs in ONE.TWO innings

and Carson SAVES the day 🙂
after the DP that Danny induced was over-turned and and then he allowed a walk to load the bases – Carson came in and got a ground out to end the game and earn his SIXTH save preserving Felix’s ELEVENTH victory.

AT the PLATE
OK, with NINETEEN hits they should have had a LOT more than SEVEN runs but, we won’t complain!
(even though they were thrown out AT the PLATE THREE times!)
~ EVERY batter had at least ONE hit
~ in fact, there were only THREE M’s batters that DIDN’T have multiple hits
~ LoMo with a lead-off homer
~ Robbie and Mark with doubles
and, something we have RARELY (if ever!) seen this season . . .
back-to-back sac flys 🙂
Who needs hits w/RISP?!? (but, FTR, they were 5/15 for that tonight)

IN the FIELD
* Seth with an OF assist to Kyle to nail a runner at 3B
* Kyle had a great bare-handed, charge to field a bunt

Mariners 2 | Angels 4

coulda shoulda woulda

ON the MOUND
JA gave up TWO in the 1st (via a single and a homer) . . .
and then proceeded to retire EIGHTEEN in-a-row!
then came the 7th and the wheels sort of fell off . . .
a double, a couple of walks, a single and a ground out all led to TWO more Halo runs and run JA from the game. Still, ‘t was a serviceable outing . . .
SEVEN innings ~ FIVE hits ~ FOUR earned runs ~ TWO walks ~ SIX strikeouts

} Mark allowed a single and a walk but, no runs in his ONE inning of work

AT the PLATE
Not enough happening here . . .
but, good to see Zu with some production – he scored both the M’s runs (singled, advanced, WP and also a solo shot)

IN the FIELD
* Beautiful relay from Mark to Brad to Kyle to nail a runner who thought he had 3B going home 🙂
* On the other side of the ledger – TWO DP’s turned against them 😦

IN the DUGOUT – yikes!

g74 | Tai terrific, Robbie roars, Nando nifty

Mariners 3 | Angels 1

coming-together

Like the glass half full or half empty, this may be a symbol of the team coming together or coming apart 😉

(also a subtle tip o’ the cap to the SCOTUS today 🙂 )

ON the MOUND
Tai’s terrific-ness is becoming a thing, his steeliness beyond his years . . .

  • In the 1st he got TWO outs on FOUR pitches then, gave up a solo shot (which would prove to be the Halos only run)
  • He only retired the side 1-2-3 twice: the 3rd and the 7th
  • And the 6th was a thing of beauty: he allowed a single (Trout), a HBP (Pujols) and then a sac bunt that got runners to 2B and 3B with only ONE out. . . Tai proceeds to get a strike out (Freese) and a fly out (Joyce)

and what a performance by the pen!

  • Charlie K’s the only guy he faced in the 8th
  • Carson allowed a hit (Trout) and a walk (Pujols) but then induces the DP

  • and, welcome back to our old friend Nando – shoots the arrow for the 15th time this season and preserves Tai’s 6th WIN

https://twitter.com/SteveSandmeyer/status/614658646119612417

AT the PLATE
Not a bad night for the bats . . .
~ NINE total hits
~ FIVE for extra-bases
~ Robbie w/his fourth homer
~ Brad and Nellie both w/RBI doubles (Brad was 3/4 w/TWO doubles) and Mark w/a double as well (his first as a Mariner)

IN the FIELD
* Nice relay from Mark to Robbie to Kyle to nab Aybar (was reviewed but call upheld)

* Well-timed DP to get Carson out of a ONE out TWO on jam in the 8th

tweets of the game . . .

g27 | can you say heart.break?

Mariners 4 | Angels 5

Ouch!

heartbreak

-Solid outing from your starter – CHECK!
-FOUR doubles – CHECK!
-Only TWO walks but, they made Richards work – CHECK!
-a string of clutch hits – CHECK!
-solid defense – CHECK!
-but then, the BP blows (twice!) – UNcheck 😦

ON the MOUND
James continues to progress . . . . SO good to see!
He gave up a TWO-run homer to Pujols in the first but, settled down and was not only effective but, efficient (including a SIX pitch 6th)
SEVEN innings ~ FOUR hits ~ TWO earned runs ~ THREE walks ~ FOUR strikeouts

} Danny goes to 3-0 on Trout leading off the 8th and then gets him to pop up. But, the double-play to end the inning comes ONE batter too late as Halos tie the game at FOUR with a bloop single, a walk and back-to-back singles.
} Dom threw TWO pitches in the bottom of the 9th . . .

AT the PLATE
~ LoMo staying HOT, another TWO doubles and a line drive single
~ Robbie comin’ ’round? couple of base knocks and then a lead-off double in the 8th
~ Kyle with an RBI single to score Robbie to tie the game
~ Zu with an RBI single to score LoMo for the first M’s run and a TWO-run double to give the M’s the lead in the 8th
~ Dustin with a sac-fly to extend the M’s lead in the 8th (slight redemption after he struck out with the bases loaded in the 6th)

IN the FIELD
* Ack with an extra-base robbing, leaping catch at the LF wall and a nice running catch
* Nellie with a nice running catch (he continues to prove he is more than servicable in RF)
