‘t was the ‘battle of the Wades’ – Miley vs LeBlanc . . . 

  • good news: our Wade outlasted their Wade, despite giving up a lotta extra-base hits, he only gave up TWO runs, struck out FIVE and went .2 innings longer than their Wade
  • bad news: our Wade only made it through 4.2 innings before leaving w/a lat injury
  • in other bad news: the TWO “A” bullpens guys – Armstrong and Alaniz (major league debut) EACH gave up a grand slam . . . yes TWO grand slams in the same game šŸ˜¦
  • positive note: maybe Gearrin has settled down a bit – second straight game w/o a walk after starting the season rather wildly

at the PLATE

  • good news: THE STREAK is ALIVE! Thanks to Tom Murphy’s homer in the 9th (which would have tied the game had the Astros not gotten that pesky, second grand slam šŸ˜‰ )
  • other good news: another game w/at least SIX runs (FOURTEEN of their first SIXTEEN games!)
  • still more good news: the hitters continue to have good, patient at-bats – made the other Wade throw 41 pitches in the 1st
  • obvious bad news: it wasn’t enough (the ELEVEN K’s didn’t help much

in the FIELD

  • no double plays but, hey, no errors šŸ™‚

Well, this was unexpected!

Whodathunk that the Mariners would be leading the majors in WINS after the first ELEVEN games?!? Granted, they’ve played TWO more games than every other team but the A’s but, still . . .

Going in to today’s rubber match w/the White Sox, this was the stat leader board . . .

Yes! YOUR Seattle Mariners were leading in ALL the above offensive categories! (plus doubles and stolen bases – which didn’t show within the screen print) šŸ™‚

And, AFTER today’s game . . .

the homer streak is alive! ELEVEN straight games with a home run!

And, the pitching isn’t all that bad – EIGHT wins from starters and SIX saves from relievers (despite our closer being on the IL)

And then there’s the defense . . .

Guillermo Heredia notched his FIRSTĀ major league RBI via his FIRSTĀ major league hit (a single to LF) and his FIRST major league run scored (via Robbie’s homer)

Edwin Diaz recorded his FIRST career save in his FIRST appearance as closer (he allowed ONE hit but, ended up striking out the side)

ON the MOUND
Lost in all the drama was Wade’s quality start . . .Ā 
SIX innings ~ FIVE hits ~ THREE earned runs ~ ONE walk ~ FIVE strikeouts

Donn went TWO full, giving up ONE run on a sac fly to Ortiz

Welcome to the closer role, dear Edwin . . .
He struck out the side (walking ONE) on a total of SEVENTEEN pitches, TEN for strikes to earn his FIRST career save (as Steve C takes a breather from the closer role)

AT the PLATE
Well, not much happening in innings ONE thru SEVEN but . . .
How ’bout that EIGHTH inning?!?!?

  • Zu leads off with a homer
  • Leonys, Luis ad Guillermo all single – and Price is chased on Guillermo’s FIRSTĀ major league hit resulting in his FIRSTĀ major league RBI
  • After Seth strikes out – Robbie hits a THREE-run shot to give the M’s a 5-4 lead (and Guillermo’s FIRST major league run scored) they would not relinquish

Nothing too out of the ordinary on either side and also, NO DP’s the entire game

Kuma not super sharp but, with some nice adjustments and ending with a quality start . . .Ā 
SIX innings ~ FOUR hits ~ TWO earned runs ~ THREE walks ~ THREE strikeouts

Wade L w/his first career save and in the process gives the pen a rest . . .
THREE innings ~ FOUR hits ~ THREE earned runs ~ ZERO walks ~ TWO strikeouts

AT the PLATE

  • Every starter had at least ONE hit
  • SEVEN starters had multiple hits (including Nori, Robbie and Shawn w/THREE each)
  • Whoa, Nellie ~ TWO hits +Ā BOTHĀ homers +Ā ONEĀ a grand salami = SEVEN RBI
  • Kyle also with a homer (of the TWO run variety)

IN the FIELD

  • No DP’s turned (FOUR turned against them but, TWO of those scored runs)
  • A couple nice catches in the OF (including a nice throw by Nori that almost nailed a runner)

yet another ONE-run loss, Wade M threw a nice quality+ start but, McCullers all but shut down the M’s bat and oh, the wasted chances (lead-off triple in the first that doesn’t score and bases-loaded with no outs = no runs)

Mariners 2 | Astros 5
Tai had to come out of the game due to his previous foot injury, Monty filled in great but, bats were fairly non-existance

Mariners 8 | Astros 9
heart-breaker, down early, tied middle then a roller coaster till the bitter end

ye of little faiht

So, going into this game I was “0 fer attended” – but, I had a good feeling about this one …
There sure were a LOT of Cardinals fans (including next to me and behind me!) But, thankfully, I left much happier than they did, despite their team’s late lead.

ON the MOUND
Welcome to Seattle, the “other Wade”!
LeBlanc was acquired from Toronto as an emergency starter in place of Taijuan Walker and what a start it was (against the third most prolific offense in baseball) . . .
SIX innings ~ THREE hits ~ ZERO runs ~ ONE walk ~ THREE strikeouts

and then, it was a tale of TWO bullys . . .
} Nick pitched a clean inning with ONE K
} Joaquin though, unimaginably, gave up THREE runs in the 8th without giving up a hit: a couple of walks (including one intentional and one of the bases-loaded variety), a HBP, an error and a wild pitch
} Don Roach, just called up from Tacoma, had a nice M’s debut: ONE-TWO innings w/a K

AT the PLATE
Only SIX total hits (Cards only had FOUR, each team walked FOUR times)
Only TWO for extra basesĀ but, both came in the 9thĀ . . .
