g84 | of iffy starts, back-to-back jacks, filthy pens and walk-off wins

Mariners 7 | Tigers 6

turning the tide

Tai allowed his first walk in ONE HUNDRED ELEVEN batters . . .
And, the REALLY unfortunate thing was the homer allowed to the next guy (and the next guy) as the Tiggers went back-to-back in the 2nd to take a 3-0 lead. He only allowed SIX total hits but, THREE of left the yard . . .
SIX innings ~ SIX hits ~ FIVE runs/earned runs ~ ONE walk ~ THREE strikeouts

} Mark, just a walk in the park: struck out the side, in order, in the 7th
} Nando, hardly a walk in the park: THREE outs occurred but, not before a solo shot tied the game at SIX in the 8th
} Carson, just another walk in the park: struck out the side, in order, in the 9th and in the 10th he struck out TWO, allowed a double and, was able to escape w/a pop-up despite having to face an extra batter due to a boo-boo by Brad (that left him with runners at the corners and TWO outs instead of being out of the inning)
} Charlie, bit of a teeter in the park:  but, a strike out of the side none-the-less

Hello OH!!!!!!
for the second straight night the M’s score FIVE+ (and THIS time, it was enough!)
~ fun to see AJ and Guti go back-to-back (AJ’s first career grand slam and Guti’s first homer in the bigs since 2013)
~ Robbie also with a homer (now batting .417 for the month of July)

the bottom of the 9th held some “small ball” promise . . .
~ pinch hitter Seth, hit a solid single through the shift
~ pinch runner Brad advanced to 2B on AJ’s sac bunt
~ but Guti struck out
~ and Robbie flied out to shallow LF

to extras we went . . .
~ in the 10th: despite TWO walks (Nellie and Ack) THREE outs occur w/o a run
~ in the 11th: Brad with a lead off single but, erased on a FC by AJ, Guit singles and Robbie singles in the WINNING RUN!!!

* Tai picks off not ONE but, TWO
* LoMo w/and unassisted DP to end the 6th: a diving snare of a line shot doubled off the runner at 1B

g82 | Monty, Seth, Mark, Joe and Nando = WIN!

Mariners 2 | Athletics 1

road victory

Winning Road Trips are Nice!
Now, her’s to carrying some momentum home and going on a run vs. Tiggers and Halos!

Monty took his run of scoreless innings to TWENTY –  a l m o s t  tied a Mariners rookie record . . .
– before allowing a solo shot to Fuld but, that would be all she wrote for the A’s
– first of his SEVEN career starts that he didn’t go at least SIX – but, he gets his 4th WIN
FIVE.TWO innings ~ SIX hits ~ ONE earned run ~ ONE walk ~ TWO strikeouts

} How spectacular has Mark Lowe been?!?!
Another ONE.ONE innings of scoreless ball w/ONE hit, TWO strikeouts
} Joe with a 1-2-3 inning (helped immensely by his DEE)
} Nando with his SIXTEENTH arrow preserved Mike’s FOURTH victory

Only FIVE total hits but, all it took was ONE single by Seth . . .
~ with Robbie and Nellie aboard (via HBP and the M’s only extra-base hit, a double) and the M’s took the lead for good!

THREE HUGE double-plays . . .
* Kyle to Robbie to LoMo
* Brad to LoMo
* Robbie to LoMo
TWO sparkling catches in the 8th
* Zu pop-up concentration in foul ground
* AJ a sliding grab on a bloop to CF

and, All Star results announced after the game – Congrats, Nellie!!!

g80 | run fun!

Mariners 9 | Athletics 5

fun run logo_kids

JA with a slow, dicey start and a great finish . . .
– a 5-4-3 DP to get out of the 1st
– 2nd not so lucky as the A’s scored THREE on a single, a double and a ground out
– but then, JA holds them scoreless the rest of his way
SIX innings ~ EIGHT hits ~ THREE earned runs ~ ZERO walks ~ FIVE strikeouts

} Mark and Charlie each with a hitless/scoreless inning (the 7th and 9th respectively)
} Carson, however, was not so effective: a couple of singles and a double yielded TWO runs (thankfully, he had a LARGE cushion 😉 )

Took a while for the bats to get going but then, going, going, gone is what they did!
~ Robbie, Nellie, Kyle and Brad all with multiple hits
~ Every starter but Mark w/at least ONE hit

not ONE, not TWO, not THREE but, FOUR 2-run HOME RUNS!!!!
(click below to to launch the video of all four)

* only ONE DP (Kyle to Robbie to LoMo to get JA out of the 1st)
* some nice OF catches and LoMo and Kyle some nice snares in all that foul ground

after the game . . .

Tom, Vidal and Roenis were optioned to AAA with corresponding moves to be announced prior to tomorrow’s game

g78 | Tai,~ Terrific, again!

Mariners 7 | Padres 0

Yowsa! Yet ANOTHER great outing from Taijuan . . .

Now gone at least SIX innings in his last SEVEN starts w/o giving up more than THREE runs
His pitch count was low today but, Lloyd trying to preserve his arm
SIX innings ~ ONE hit ~ ZERO runs ~ ZERO walks ~ SEVEN strikeouts

} Vidal, Mark, Nando and Tom were able to keep the shutout going . . .
pitching a combined THREE innings, giving up THREE hits and ONE walk

Look Ma, runs!
~ Is Robbie really turning the corner? FOUR for FIVE w/a homer, a double, THREE RBI and TWO runs scored

~ Nellie also with a multi-hit game: TWO hits (including a homer), TWO runs, TWO RBI

~ Zu with a walk and a run scored
~ Brad with a run scored and LoMo with an RBI

* ONE DP (Robbie to Brad to LoMo)
* Brad with a really nice pick and spin

g75 | shoulda, woulda, coulda

Mariners 2 | Angels 4

coulda shoulda woulda

JA gave up TWO in the 1st (via a single and a homer) . . .
and then proceeded to retire EIGHTEEN in-a-row!
then came the 7th and the wheels sort of fell off . . .
a double, a couple of walks, a single and a ground out all led to TWO more Halo runs and run JA from the game. Still, ‘t was a serviceable outing . . .
SEVEN innings ~ FIVE hits ~ FOUR earned runs ~ TWO walks ~ SIX strikeouts

} Mark allowed a single and a walk but, no runs in his ONE inning of work

Not enough happening here . . .
but, good to see Zu with some production – he scored both the M’s runs (singled, advanced, WP and also a solo shot)

* Beautiful relay from Mark to Brad to Kyle to nail a runner who thought he had 3B going home 🙂
* On the other side of the ledger – TWO DP’s turned against them 😦

IN the DUGOUT – yikes!

g69 | Walker had duel meanings tonight: the starter and the hitters :-)

Mariners 6 | Astros 3

Coming Together

Stellar starter + outstanding offense + dynamite defense + resounding relief = SERIES WIN!!!

Tai just keeps getting better and better . . .
tonight, he recorded a career high strikeouts and walked NONE (just needs to get a bit more efficient) his full line . . .
SIX.ONE innings ~ FIVE hits ~ THREE earned runs ~ ZERO walks ~ ELEVEN strikeouts

the bullpen didn’t allow a run . . .
} Nuno didn’t recored an out (allowed a walk and a run)
} Nando, Mark, Charlie and Carson combined for a 2-hit, no run, no walk FOUR.TWO innings with Carson earning his FIFTH save, preserving Tai’s FIFTH victory

~ The first TWO runs came via TWO bases-loaded walks in the 2nd
~ Every starter but Zu had ONE hit (FIVE total walks) and THREE of them left the yard (all solo shots) . . .

~ The other run came off the bat of Robbie – an RBI single
~ LoMo with his FIFTH steal 🙂

* Brad had a couple of really nice spinning plays but, also had a scary moment when he nearly went into the stands to catch a foul ball but, instead crashed into the short wall (gonna have some sore ribs) and missed the ball due to fan interference (fan was escorted out)
* No DP’s on either side

tweets of the game . . .

g68 | Houston, we have a . . . victory!

Mariners 5 | Astros 2

Roenis bookended his start by allowing homers on the first pitch of the game and his last pitch of the game . . .
but, everything in-between was pretty great!

at one point retired TWELVE in-a-row 🙂
SEVEN innings ~ FOUR hits ~ TWO earned runs ~ ZERO walks ~ TEN strikeouts

Only a total of EIGHT hits but, also SEVEN walks . . .
~ SIXTEEN opportunities w/RISP (OK – only came through THRICE but, ‘t was enough!)
~ it all started with LoMo being called SAFE w/ONE in the 1st out on a call that was reviewed and he would end up scoring the first run on a bases loaded walk
~ despite only ONE hit, Mark posted THREE RBI
~ good to see Kyle, Nellie (both had been suffering from food poisoning) and Robbie (out yesterday with ‘cough-cough’ a sore back) wasting no time contributing

No DP’s turned (though one turned against them)
‘stros have some great defensive players but, M’s were able to take advantage of a error
