Mariners 4 | Angels 1

ON the MOUND
The closest thing that Felix has ever had to a playoff game – and, he did NOT disappoint  . . .
FIVE.ONE innings ~ ONE hit ~ ZERO runs ~ ZERO earned runs ~ ZERO walks ~ SEVEN strikeouts

The one hit was a single by Pujols in the 1st and then Felix proceeded to retire FOURTEEN in-a-row. The only reason he didn’t go longer was because during his outing, the A’s beat the Rangers which was the last straw on the camel’s back that was the M’s shot at a chance for post season. Lloyd took him out shortly after that to a thunderous ovation of pure love and appreciation for his CY-worthy, season-long effort . . .

} Brandon replaced Felix and promptly gave up a hit and a wild pitch but, escaped the 6th unscathed and breezed through the 7th
} Joe and Yourvis combined for a scoreless 8th
} Danny took the 9th and gave up a single and an RBI double before retiring the side

AT the PLATE
~ M’s took an early 1-0 lead in the 2nd on a LoMo single and a Condor RBI double
~ M’s added on in the 4th w/ a Kendrys walk, another LoMo single, another Condor RBI double and a Zu 2-run single gave the M’s a 4-0 lead

IN the FIELD
Nice DEE all around (although NO DP’s by either team)

g160 | Kuma back to Kuma

‘t was my last regular season game in person and it was thoroughly enjoyable. Meaningful baseball on the 160th game of the season is FUN 🙂

Mariners 4 | Angels 3

ON the MOUND
He had to come out of the game for precautionary reasons in the 7th . . .
But, Kuma rebounded to give the M’s exactly what they needed. His only snafu – back-to-back solo shots (Calhoun and Trout – no shame there) . . .
SIX.ONE innings ~ FOUR hits ~ TWO earned runs ~ ZERO walks ~ FOUR strikeouts

} Brandon, Danny and Carson combined for only ONE hit and FOUR strikeouts (including a classic one of Trout by the rook Smith)

} Yes, it was a FRE . . .
as Nando gave up a run on a single and a double but, the 48th arrow flew into a sea of rally towels

AT the PLATE
Not super prolific but, powerful . . .
~ Only SEVEN total hits but THREE homers (Kendrys, Michael and Ack)
~ Michael also had a double
~ Austin had a stolen base and Chris T had TWO! (only seems happy when his uni is dirty 😉 )

IN the FIELD
No double-play and one turned against them but, SOLID DEE all-around tonight (including on the other side, especially Trout’s filthy theft of  Kendry’s sure double in the 8th)

tweets of the game . . .

g159 | salvaged and still breathing . . .

So, the M’s ACE and their Ace in-the-making lose BIG, the rook goes a stellar eight but loses and their only win in Toronto comes from the ‘bull-pen’ game – go figure.

still breathing

Mariners 7 | Blue Jays 5

ON the MOUND
This ‘bull pen’ start definitely wasn’t pretty but, the M’s will take the final result . . .
Tom “started” but only went 1.1 while giving up TWO earned runs. They proceeded to use EIGHT more pitchers, Danny the only one to go TWO innings. Joe also gave up TWO runs, they all combined for NINE strikeouts. Nando gave up ONE run but, shot the arrow for the 47th time this season.

AT the PLATE
The bat finally awoke! Of their TEN total hits, SEVEN were for extra-bases . . .
~ LoMo with TWO homers (FOUR rbi) and Zu with ONE
~ Brad with TWO doubles, Robbie and Kendrys each with ONE
~ Runs scored all through out the line up

IN the FIELD
THREE errors (Chris, Kendrys and Brad) but, thankfully didn’t factor in

g152 | 11 K’s, 9th inning drama and 46 arrows

WoW!!!
What a game! Felix was mowing down the AAAAngels (since they clinched last night, no starters were in). But, the Halos pitching was returning the favor . . . until the 9th

ON the MOUND
As per usual, Felix was awesome . . .

} Though not sharp, Charlie and Tom managed to combine for a scoreless 8th
} Nando registering about 7.5 on the #QuiverMeter, allowing a ONE-out homer, committing an error (dropped toss from LoMo at 1B) but then getting a ground out and a strikeout – to earn . . .

AT the PLATE
Other than Robbie’s 1st inning TWO-out double, the M’s only scattered singles, until the 9th . . .
~Kendrys got a TWO-out single
~ JJ (who’d been ready and waiting ALL night long) pinch ran
~ JJ ended up on 2B via a pick-off attempt gone wrong
~ Kyle was then intentionally walked and THEN . . .

IN the FIELD
Zero DP’s turned and Nando had a little boo-boo at the 1B bag – thankfully, it didn’t matter

tweets of the game . . .

LOVE that Felix has his own stat (and he increased his lead in the category tonight!  🙂

g151 | UP down, UP down, UP down . . .

One night they are riding high, winning and the right teams losing.
The next night stellar starter but frozen bats and the wrong teams winning.

Mariners 0 | Angels 5

ON the MOUND
James was spectacular through SIX, allowing only TWO singles and NO walks . . .

and then came the 7th when he allowed TWO one-out singles that added up to the Angels first run. He then intentionally walked Aybar and struck out Inanetta and in came Danny who promptly gave up a homer to Crone and TWO runs were charged to James – who ended with a line I think we’d still take most nights . . .
SIX.TWO innings ~ FOUR hits ~ THREE earned runs ~ ONE walk ~ EIGHT strikeouts

Bullpen was a tale of TWO relievers . . .
} Just wasn’t Danny’s night. Aside from giving up the THREE-run homer on the third pitch he threw, he allowed a walk on SIX pitches and then an RBI double on ONE pitch. Didn’t get out of the inning 😦
} Dom came in to get that seemingly elusive final out of the 7th (a K of Trout) and also retired the side in order in the 8th (which, unfortunately, was the last inning required for the Halos)

AT the PLATE
Not often walks exceed hits . . .
~ M’s first base-runner wasn’t until the 4th (Robbie walked)
~ M’s first (and ONLY) hit wasn’t until the 5th (Justin singled)
~ M’s first runner past 1B wasn’t until the 7th when JJ stole 2B (pinch running for Kendrys who’s walked)

IN the FIELD
Everything bad happened in the 7th, including TWO rare fielding errors . . .
* Chris D’s got the Halos going
* Robbie’s missed catch advanced a runner to 3B (he was stranded but, the damage was done)

tweets of the game . . .

Mariners 13 | Angels 2

ON the MOUND
Roenis had a rough 1st inning . . .
when he hit the lead-off batter and gave up THREE straight singles for the Halos first TWO runs. He settled down in the 2nd and 3rd allowing only one over the minimum but, then in the 4th he gave up a single and had to leave the game with an injury mid-way through the next AB 😦
THREE innings ~ FIVE hits ~ TWO earned runs ~ ONE walk ~ ONE strikeout

the bullpen, called into early duty and they could not have performed better = SIX scoreless . . .
} Carson continues to impress – he threw TWO complete w/ONE walk and ONE strikeout to earn his first major league victory!
} Brandon, Tom, Joe and Lucas each threw ONE inning, Joe gave up the only hit in relief

AT the PLATE
Well, well, well! What do we have here?!? RUNS, RUNS, RUNS, and lots of fun with numbers – that’s what we have here!
~ FOURTEEN hits
~ THIRTEEN runs
~ SIX doubles (Ack, LoMo, Kendrys, Chris T and Zu)
~ THREE of the SIX doubles were in the 5th inning and drove in runs (Zu, Chris, Ack)
~ Every starter with at least ONE hit
~ Kyle, Kendrys, Chris T and Zu all with TWO
~ Runs and RBI’s nicely scattered throughout the lineup
~ ZERO homers

IN the FIELD
* Joe with a throwing error
* Nice DP turned to end the 1st w/runners on
* Zu threw out Hamilton trying to steal 2B
* Gotta love Zu’s ‘wiser than his years’ handling of Roenis. Apparently he let Skip know that something didn’t seem quite right fairly early on so, they were watching him close and sure enough (unfortunately) he had to come out of the game (elbow MRI coming tomorrow)

tweets of the game . . .

g146 | pitcher battles, solo shots rule, save prevails . . .

Mariners 4 | Athletics 2

ON the MOUND
James said he didn’t have fast ball command and really had to battle but, all the better to know that he could get through SIX on a less than stellar day . . .
SIX innings ~ FOUR hits ~ TWO runs ~ ONE earned run ~ THREE walks ~ EIGHT strikeouts
(the THREE walks were in the same inning – the 3rd – TWO one-out walks, a strikeout, an RBI single, a walk and a K)

} Carson continues to impress, this time retiring the first FIVE batters he faced (including TWO strikeouts) before walking a batter. Charlie came in and got the third out of the 8th (Dunn flied out)
} Nando’s franchise tying 45th save (w/Sasaki) wasn’t without a tad bit of drama (first two batters singled) but, as per usual – he GOT IT DONE with a ground out and TWO K’s

AT the PLATE
Not a lot of hits (7) but, just enough runs and a nice extra-base hit ratio (5) . . .
~ THREE solo shots (Robbie, LoMo and Kendrys)
~ a Kyle walk and a Zu double accounted for the other score (LoMo had the other double)

IN the FIELD
* Austin took a couple steps forward, made a quick adjustment for a great catch for the third out of the 1st
* Kyle made a great play (after a muff) diving stop and a flip to Robbie at 2B to get the pitcher running (yes – the pitcher in an AL game – Oak lost their DH when he had to move to catcher when

tweets of the game . . .

g142 | bookend losses, middle-trip wins . . .

Despite the loss today (another of the ONE run variety), the M’s still prove to be ROAD WARRIORS . . .
losing the first game to the A’s and the last game to the Rangers but, coming away with a 5-2 road trip.

Road-Warriors

Mariners 0 | Rangers 1

ON the MOUND
James with another nice outing – SIX of his EIGHT starts have been of the “quality” variety . . .
SIX innings ~ FIVE hits ~ ONE earned run ~ TWO walks ~ THREE strikeouts

} Dom, Lucas and Tai each recorded an out in the 8th, retiring the Rangers in order
} Tai went on to pitch the complete 8th, giving up a triple to the second batter but, a sharp ground out to Kyle and a strikeout and he escaped trouble.

AT the PLATE
M’s outhit the Rangers by a couple (8-6) but, fell short in the run department . . .
~ First time the M’s have been shutout in Arlington since September of 1991
~ Austin and Robbie both with TWO hits
~ Kendrys and Jesus each with a double
~ Kyle and Corey with the other hits
Gotta tip the cap to Holland, Tolleson and Feliz (who the M’s have STILL NEVER scored upon)

IN the FIELD
* interesting bottom of the 3rd when the Rangers ran into THREE outs . . .
a DP caught the lead runner between 2B and 3B and, for some inexplicable reason, the runner at 1B kept going and was tagged out at 2B. Martin then singled on a bunt but during the next AB, he made the mistake of trying to steal and was easily thrown out by Jesus

* even MORE interesting . . .
Danny pinch ran for Kendrys with ONE out in the 9th and got to 3B on a single by Kyle but, was stranded there when James popped up to shallow left and Justin flied out to deep left

* M’s recorded TWO double-plays, to the Rangers ZERO
* But, they also had RARE errors from both Robbie and Jesus

tweets of the game . . .

g141 | “It was worth the wait.” —Lloyd McClendon

Mariners 4 | Rangers 2

ON the MOUND
Mr Young had a nice bounce-back start – didn’t go far and didn’t get the win but, kept ’em in it . . .
Too many walks (although ONE was intentional) and too many pitches prevented him from getting a career high THIRTEENTH victory but, still worlds beyond his last start and still a serious candidate for Comeback Player of the Year
FIVE innings ~ FOUR hits ~ TWO earned runs ~ ZERO earned runs ~ THREE walks ~ SIX strikeouts

The bullpen strikes (’em down) again . . .
} Carson, Charlie and Danny combined for THREE scoreless innings, Danny went TWO and got the W
} Nando a quiver-free 1-2-3 9th for his league-leading 43rd save

AT the PLATE
ELEVEN total hits – only TWO w/ RISP but, it was enough . . .
~ Kyle was the star – which is nothing new, especially vs. the Rangers – THREE hits and only TWO w/RISP, including the game-tying homer in the 4th and a single and a run-scored in the 8th
~ Awesome to see Brad contributing – even in his now reduce roll – FOUR hits today, including a double
~ Robbie had a hit and scored a run
~ Kendrys had another TWO hits – he and LoMo each recorded RBI singles
~ the bad news of the day was Dustin coming out of the game with an ankle injury of some sort 😦

IN the FIELD
* Ack with a nice sliding catch of a pop foul – had to run far and slide in time
* M’s didn’t turn any DP’s but did have TWO turned against them
* Danny with a pick-off at 1B
* Brad with an error which was followed by the unearned runs

tweets of the game . . .

g140 | homers galore!

Mariners 7 | Rangers 5

ON the MOUND
Kuma wasn’t exactly lights out but, he did  j u s t  enough to keep ’em in it and get the “W” . . .
FIVE.ONE innings ~ SEVEN hits ~ THREE earned runs ~ ONE walk ~ FIVE strikeouts

The bullpen was an unusual mixed-bag . . .
Charlie was the only reliever not to allow hit, that means each of Brandon, Joe, Tom, Yourvis and Nanda  allowed a hit. Brandon and Nando each allowed ONE run. But, in the end, they got it done. M’s got their 77th victory (4th straight on the road trip) and Nando got his 42nd save.

AT the PLATE
Only SEVEN total hits but, FOUR for extra-bases . . .
~ Austin and James with doubles
~ Kendrys, Zu and Brad with homers (Kendrys w/TWO
~ Kendrys with FOUR RBI
~ Kyle (unusually!) didn’t collect a hit but, he walked TWICE and scored TWICE

IN the FIELD
Brad with another error 😦 but, also part of both DP’s the M’s turned
