g109 | THREE in the 1st? so what!

Every year, I’m so captivated by the Opening Day ceremony, there’s always a point where I realize. “wow, we still get to watch a baseball game!”. That realization was ten-fold tonight, as Griffey’s Number Retirement Ceremony was the ceremony to end all ceremonies (see post dedicated to that here )

OK, how weird was that?!?
Trout w/ a THREE-run home run for the second straight game . . .
but, M’s made it moot 🙂

ON the MOUND
Unlike Felix the previous night, Tai (just off the DL) wasn’t able to get deep . . .
He failed to strike out at least one batter for the first time in his career and FOUR of the SEVEN hits he allowed were for extra-bases.
FOUR innings ~ SEVEN hits ~ SIX earned run ~ TWO walks ~ ZERO walks

But, Yay, for the Bully!

Cody, Drew, Tom and Eddy combined for FIVE scoreless innings . . .

  • Cody especially impressive, going TWO.TWO, allowing only TWO hits, NO walks
  • w/the weird way they score wins, Drew gets it, despite only facing ONE batter
  • Tom looked great, striking out TWO of the THREE batters he faced
  • Eddy earned his FOURTH save (though he’s slackin’ – didn’t K a batter 😉 )

AT the PLATE
TEN total hits including THREE homers and TWO doubles . . .

  • great to see Guti getting going – triple short of the cycle!
  • Guillermo’s FIRST major league homer
  • and, the big blast by, of course, Shawn O’Malley 🙂

(btw ~ I really did say “Do it for Jr!” Right before Shawn hit the homer to take the lead 🙂 )

IN the FIELD

Sparkling DEE tonight! Including THREE double-plays and TWO of the home run heros each turn around and make GREAT plays in the field the next half inning . . .

  • Guillermo w/ a nice running grab in left and a throw to double the runner off 1B
  • Shawn with a great snare and a “I don’t know how he did that” cross-body throw to get the runner at 1B (after which, a spontaneous chant of “Shawn O’Malley!” broke out)

Very strange start to this game (both for me and for the team) . . .

I arrived at the ballpark realizing I’d forgotten my portable phone charger so, I spent the first TWO innings near The Pen, at the ‘charging station’ watching a nearby TV and listening to the Halos broadcast via At Bat. Trout hit the THREE-run homer just as I plugged in (and, of course the Halos announcers were giddy – little did they know what would happen in the bottom of the inning 😉 )

ON the MOUND
Yes, that 1st inning was exasperating (Trout just seems to have Felix’s number) . . .
But, was SO good to see Felix dial it in and go a full EIGHT (something he had yet to do this season) and, ultimately, get the win . . .
EIGHT innings ~ THREE hits ~ FOUR earned runs ~ THREE walks ~ SIX strikeouts

Eddy gets his THIRD save in style ~ THREE up/THREE down ~ all K’s

AT the PLATE
FOURTEEN hits ~ only ONE for extra-bases ~ Zu’s THREE-run bomb in the 1st

  • Kyle the only starter w/o a hit
  • Nori and Adam both had THREE hits
  • Seth and Leonys both had TWO hits
  • only a total of THREE strikeouts

IN the FIELD
* error by Adam but, an OF assist by Seth to get the lead-runner in the 5th
* around-the-horn double-play (Kyle-Robbie-Adam) to end the 7th

Great series with great pitching and  j u s t  enough offense – until tonight . . .

ON the MOUND
Welcome to Seattle, Ariel!
Newly acquired (from the O’s for Wade Miley) Ariel Miranda made his first big leagues start (not an easy task vs. the BoSox) and he showed a lot of promise . . .
SIX innings ~ EIGHT hits ~ TWO runs ~ ONE walk ~ FIVE strikeouts

Bully . . .
the combination of Drew, Vidal, Tom and Blake combined for FOUR scoreless innings but, then, in the 11th, Cody allowed a lead-off single, a sac-bunt and an RBI single that proved to be the winning run

AT the PLATE
Kinda crazy – the M’s had only SIX hits . .

  • only ONE for extra-bases ~ Shawn O’Malley’s FIRST major league home run
  • NINE walks (more walks than hits? should have yielded more runs)
  • THIRTEEN K’s – yikes!

IN the FIELD
* Nice catch at the wall by Guillermo
* THREE double-plays (including one of the unassisted variety by Dae-Ho!)

Kuma not super sharp but, with some nice adjustments and ending with a quality start . . . 
SIX innings ~ FOUR hits ~ TWO earned runs ~ THREE walks ~ THREE strikeouts

Wade L w/his first career save and in the process gives the pen a rest . . .
THREE innings ~ FOUR hits ~ THREE earned runs ~ ZERO walks ~ TWO strikeouts

AT the PLATE

  • Every starter had at least ONE hit
  • SEVEN starters had multiple hits (including Nori, Robbie and Shawn w/THREE each)
  • Whoa, Nellie ~ TWO hits + BOTH homers + ONE a grand salami = SEVEN RBI
  • Kyle also with a homer (of the TWO run variety)

IN the FIELD

  • No DP’s turned (FOUR turned against them but, TWO of those scored runs)
  • A couple nice catches in the OF (including a nice throw by Nori that almost nailed a runner)

ON the MOUND
After cruising through THREE, James couldn’t quit get through SIX . . .
FIVE.TWO innings ~ NINE hits ~ FOUR runs (3 earned) ~ TWO walks ~ TWO strikeouts

  • The Bartender (fresh up from Tacoma) got the final out of the 6th
  • Nathan went THREE, allowed a TWO-run homer in the but, was credited with the save and preserved James’ second victory and the M’s series win!

AT the PLATE
Where do I start?!?
SIXTEEN hits (including NINE for extra-bases) and FIVE home runs (including TWO from ZU in his 2016 debut!!!!)

  • So great to see ZU debut in a big way – hopefully the start of a very good thing!
  • Nellie, Adam and Seth (third in a row!) had the other homers
  • Kyle and Adam both had TWO doubles (and Adam was a triple short of the cycle!)
  • Nice to see more walks (SEVEN) than strikeouts (FIVE)
  • How ’bout Shawn?!? TWO hit, TWO runs, TWO walks
  • Only ONE starter (Dae-Ho) was without a run scored
  • Only ONE starter (Leonys) was without a hit (though he walked twice and scored once)

IN the FIELD

  • Shawn with an error
  • ONE dp turned (Kyle-Robbie-Adam)

ON the MOUND
James’ first inning may have been a bit of an omen for the rest of the game . . . 
He allowed a lead-off triple and then a ground rule double, a walk, a couple of strikeouts and a fly out – so, he was lucky to get out of the inning allowing just ONE run. He then scattered a couple hits/walks over the next TWO innings, had a 1-2-3 4th but, the 5th would be his undoing: after striking out the lead-off batter, he allowed THREE straight doubles and THEN a TRIPLE – ugh.
FIVE innings ~ EIGHT hits ~ FIVE earned runs ~ TWO walks ~ SEVEN strikeouts

the bully was no better . . . 
Only Dave Rollins (who struck out the only batter he faced) had success.
Donn, Nick, Edwin and Vidal combined for THREE.TWO innings and SIX earned runs

AT the PLATE
on the surface, it sounded like a successful day – TWELVE hits and SIX runs
~ including FOUR doubles (Dae-Ho, Shawn, Robbie and Nellie)
~ TWO homers (Nellie’s solo shot to extend a lead & Guit’s 3-run shot to tie it at SIX)

But, the early lead and the late comeback were overwhelmed by the Cards SIX homers in FOUR innings 😦

IN the FIELD
* Chris w/a passed ball and Kyle w/a fielding error
* Guti with an extra base hit robbery at the wall

So, Adrian Sampson, called up to replace Wade Miley (who went on the DL earlier this month) didn’t get to make his second major leagues start, he experienced issues in his warm up in Detroit and now, is scheduled for elbow surgery 😦

Scoring SIX runs should by indicative of a win but, unfortunately, James (subbing for Felix who’s now on the DL with a calf strain) had a rough 2016 debut. He didn’t even survive the 4th and made a costly error that contributed to a SIX run 1st inning for the Padres.

The bullpen wasn’t much help – Joel and Steve each allowed FOUR hits and THREE runs! (and, Joel found himself DFA’d after the game)

The good news was: Kyle, Robbie, Nellie and Guti all stayed HOT, HOT, HOT (even Luis had a couple of hits!)

THE biggest come-back in Mariners organization HISTORY!

Down 12-2 in the going into the 6th, the M’s proceeded to score FIVE in the 6th and NINE in the 7th to seal what would become one of the craziest wins ever (luckily, I got home just as the 7th inning started so, got to witness history, at least via TV). Obviously, not a lot of pitching on either side (Miley w/his worst M’s start) but, the ‘new guy’, Cody Martin gets the victory for the M’s

Strange series to be sure . . .

  • M’s swept the Rays (who came into the series having won 8 of their last 12)
  • M’s got swept by the Halos (who came into the series having lost 10 of their last 12)

Go figure.

Probably Felix’s best start this season . . .
SEVEN.ONE innings ~ SEVEN hits ~ THREE earned runs ~ TWO walks ~ NINE strikeouts
Unfortunately, much like seasons past but, UNlike the season so far this year – the bats were all but dead.

Bully . . .
Nick allowed an inherited runner to score (still think they should ‘share the blame’) and Monty pitched a scoreless 9th

Move along . . . nothing to see here 😦
TWO measly hits (both singles), TWO hit-by-pitch, ONE walk

IN the FIELD
a nice DP to end the 2nd (and we’re thinking ‘we got this’ . . . *sigh*)

 

But, it was a fun day at the ballpark because I got to share in the misery 😉
