g160 | last Felix day, not so happy . . .

Mariners 2 | Athletics 8

Sort of a surreal feeling to this one, as prior to the game, it was reported that Eric Wedge would not return as manager next season (apparently, his decision). More on that later. Meanwhile, M’s have played the A’s tough all season – not so tonight.

ON THE MOUND
Not exactly the way Felix wanted to end the season . . .
It was a “quality start” and after the rough 1st he was able to settle down but, he just threw WAY too many pitches (106!)
SIX innings ~ FIVE hits ~ THREE earned runs ~ ONE walk ~ SIX strikeouts

} and then there was Ollie, Carter, Lucas and Tom . . .
with their all too familiar collective ineffectiveness 😦

AT THE PLATE
The bats continue to put up a good ratio of extra base hits but, when the TOTAL hits is only FOUR, doesn’t really matter that TWO of them were homers (Guti and Kendrys) – especially when they’re solo shots. Old Bartolo just shut ’em down.

IN THE FIELD
Only ONE double-play and, another error for Nick 😦

g157 | extra heartbreak

Mariners 5 | Royals 6 (in 12)

M’s are now 6-15 in extra innings 😦

ON THE MOUND
Nice to see Brandon go a full SEVEN for the first time this season – and a strong seven, at that . . .
SEVEN innings ~ FOUR hits ~ TWO runs ~ ONE run ~ ONE walk ~ SIX strikeouts

The bullpen, as has so often been the case this season, was NO help what-so-ever . . .
} Charlie gave up THREE runs to give the Royals the lead in the 8th
} Tom, Danny, Ollie and Chance combined for 4.1 scoreless innings
} Lucas gave up a walk and an RBI double that would ultimately be the winning run

AT THE PLATE
‘t is a rare thing to have nearly twice as many walks as hits . . .
the M’s had only SIX hits in the entire game  but, THREE were for extra bases – Kendrys and Michael homered, Kyle’s double didn’t come till the 10th.  FOUR of their ELEVEN walks came in extras (TWO intentional to Kendrys and Michael in the 10th)

IN THE FIELD
BOTH teams had TWO errors (throwing errors for Nick and Abraham) AND outfield assists on throws home (Michael). The Royals turned THREE double-plays to the M’s ONE

g156 | victory salvaged amid the bees . . .

Mariners 3 | Angels 2

ON THE MOUND
Great to see Felix back on the mound (after 20 days off) but, a rather strange outing . . .

FOUR innings ~ ONE hit ~ ONE earned run ~ FOUR walks ~ TEN strikeouts (in 92 pitches)

} Solid relief effort as Ollie, Carter, Charlie, Yoervis, Danny combined to give up only FOUR hits and ONE run, striking out FIVE over the next FIVE innings – Ollie picked up the win and Danny his 15th save.

AT THE PLATE
~ Kendrys with TWO hits and a run scored – on Mike’s 2nd inning RBI double
~ Justin hit his 18th homer of the season with Kyle aboard in the 6th to give the M’s the 3-2 lead they would not relinquish.

IN THE FIELD
Kyle with a SB and Carlos with an error (no DPs)

g154 | dueling youngsters, M’s blinked first

Mariners 2 | Angels 3 (in 11)

ON THE MOUND
Erasmo was cruising along through SIX (as was Shoemaker) scattering a SIX hits and then came the 7th (where BOTH pitchers gave up their first TWO runs of the game). For Erasmo, they were both unearned, and given up by Chance after Erasmo left the game with a strained groin . . .
SIX innings ~ SIX hits ~ TWO unearned runs ~ ZERO earned runs ~ ONE walk ~ THREE strikeouts

} Lucas, Carter and Bobby managed to keep the Halos scoreless for another THREE full innings but, Bobby couldn’t hold it and gave up a couple of singles in the 11th, the last one coming with TWO outs and ONE on for the game-winning hit.

AT THE PLATE
Multi-hit games from Michael (who had BOTH RBI), Dustin and Nick but . . . .
TWO runs usually not gonna do it and, tonight was no exception

IN THE FIELD
* Kyle with another error
* THREE double-plays (all Dustin-Nick-Justin)

tweets of the game . . .

g150 | dog, er . . . tiger, days

Mariners 2 | Tigers 4

ON THE MOUND
Joe had an ominous start, allowing a couple of singles and a WP in the 1st for the Tigers first run . . .
he then settle down and cruised through the next FOUR innings (with the help of a couple double plays). But, with TWO outs in the 6th, he gave up a walk (to Miggy) and THREE straight singles for the Tigers next TWO runs and that would be that.
5.2 innings ~ SEVEN hits ~ THREE earned runs ~ ONE walk ~ THREE strikeouts

} Tom was able to get that third out of the 6th right away but, allowed a run on a couple of singles in the 7th
} Ollie posted a clean inning but, ‘t was too little, too late for the O

AT THE PLATE
Only SEVEN total hits  – TWO of the extra base variety – from the young and the old . . .
~ Abraham’s hot bat stays that way with TWO more hits, including his 2nd homer
~ Raul hit his 20th double

IN THE FIELD
* Justin with a rare error
* Carlos, while he didn’t get any hits, filled in nicely for Brad at SS (including being in TWO of THREE double plays)

g147 | lack of fundamentals sinks rooks and wastes Kuma’s gem

Mariners 1 | Cardinals 2 (in 10)

lead glove

ON THE MOUND
Kuma tossed a gem (getting to that 200 inning milestone once again) but it was all for naught . . .
SEVEN innings ~ THREE hits ~ ZERO earned runs ~ ZERO runs ~ TWO walks ~ ONE strikeout

the bullpen was a mixed bag . . .
} Charlie allowed a run on a walk and a hit
} Yoervis was strong in his 1.1 w/ no hits or walks and ONE strikeout
} things really crumbled in the 10th when Chance came in, struck out the first two batters, then allowed a single. Ollie relieved him and walked TWO to load the bases and then the winning run scored on a passed ball 😦

AT THE PLATE
~ TEN hits is good.
~ Only ONE run on only ONE extra base hit (Mike’s third homer), not so much.
They were still in line to take this game, despite the lack of offensive production – the defensive miscues really hurt.

IN THE FIELD
* Nick misjudged a pop-up that ended up going for a TWO base error
* Brad made a bad throw to Kendrys that allowed the tying run to score
* Mike allowed a passed ball with the bases loaded in the 10th that allowed the winning run to score

tweets of the game . . .

g146 | oh the woes . . . series loss to the ‘stros

Mariners 1 | Astros 6

ON THE MOUND
Brandon’s struggles continue – looked great in the 1st inning and it was all downhill from there . . .
THREE innings ~ SEVEN hits ~ FIVE earned runs ~ ZERO walks ~ THREE strikeouts

} Other than Hector (who gave up ONE basically meaningless run on THREE singles in the 9th) the bullpen was strong . . .
Bobby, Tommy and Ollie combined for FIVE scoreless innings, allowing only ONE hit, ONE walk and striking out SEVEN

AT THE PLATE
Only FIVE hits (with Kendrys’ 21st homer the loan XBH)

IN THE FIELD
No DP’s turned by either team, a couple of pick-offs on each side, an SB by the ‘stros and a CS by Mike

tweet of the game . . .

g143 | brooms in the closet . . .

Mariners 1 | Rays 4

ON THE MOUND
Erasmo deserved a much better fate (at least he didn’t get the loss)/ Despite the less ugly walk total, it was by far his best outing of the season . . . .
SIX innings ~ ZERO earned runs ~ ZERO runs ~ FOUR walks ~ FIVE STRIKEOUTS

} Charlie walked a batter but, posted a scoreless 7th
} Yoervis imploded in the 8th and was unable to record an out, giving up THREE runs in the process
} Ollie finished the 8th without further damage
} Hector added another run to the Rays total, seemingly a miracle that it wasn’t more (since he yielded TWO walks, TWO singles and TWO doubles – yikes!)

AT THE PLATE
Then M’s scored their loan run on their loan extra base hit – Kendrys lead-off the 2nd inning with his 20th homer of the season. They also induced FIVE walks and had the lead-off man aboard in FIVE innings but, no mas.

IN THE FIELD
* Abraham committed his first big league error but, also recorded an OF assist nailing a runner at the plate
* there were TWO double-plays turned in the losing effort

tweets of the game . . .

g141 | spoilin’ the Rays

Mariners 6 | Rays 4

ON THE MOUND
Definitely not one of Kuma’s stellar outings but, he kept ’em in it . . .
5.2 innings ~ EIGHT hits ~ THREE earned runs ~ TWO walks ~ FIVE strikeouts

} Yoervis bent, giving up a hit and a walk, but didn’t break in his 1.1. inning
} Ollie didn’t even record and out
} Carter got that rare distinction of the blown save AND the win for his ONE inning of work where he walked TWO and gave up TWO hits and a run
} Danny gave up a hit in the 9th but, recorded his THIRTEENTH save

AT THE PLATE
Only EIGHT hits but nice that they were THREE for SEVEN w/RISP . . .
~ Justin with a TWO-run double
~ Nick and Kyle both with RBI singles in the same inning

And then there was Rauuuuuuul with his 27th homer (a solo shot) his second in as many games

IN THE FIELD
* Nick and Guti both with steals
* Carter with a pick off (and Brad was picked off)
* Nice DP turned

g137 | of Felix milestones and struggles vs. lefties . . .

Mariners 1 | Royals 3

ON THE MOUND
King Felix was looking a little more like King Felix . . .
The Royals play small ball for sure – they managed to score THREE runs on NO extra base hits
6.2 innings ~ SIX hits ~ THREE earned runs ~ ONE walk ~ SIX strikeouts

Congratulations to Felix on a MILESTOEN REACHED . . .
at least 200 strikeouts for FIVE straight seasons

} Ollie got in some good work ~ 1.1 scoreless innings with a couple of strikeouts

AT THE PLATE
Gettin’ ’em on came a bit easier today . . .
it was just that pesky gettin’ ’em over and in that was the issue 😦  . . . . ONE for ELEVEN, to be exact
~ Brad and Kyle had FIVE of the SEVEN total hits (including a triple and double, respectively)
~ Abraham had his first major league double
~ Mike was 0-3 with a walk and a couple of strikeouts in his return from the DL
~ seems they need a remedy for left-handed pitching (M’s batting .228 vs. lefties)

IN THE FIELD
Brad had a fielding error and Mike a throwing error (but, still great to have Mike back behind the plate)
