g90-92 | Who’s your daddy?

Awesome outing from Kuma in the middle-game they won (and Steve earned his 22nd save) but, little else to write home about in this series 😦

elusive

ON the MOUND
James’ first inning may have been a bit of an omen for the rest of the game . . .
He allowed a lead-off triple and then a ground rule double, a walk, a couple of strikeouts and a fly out – so, he was lucky to get out of the inning allowing just ONE run. He then scattered a couple hits/walks over the next TWO innings, had a 1-2-3 4th but, the 5th would be his undoing: after striking out the lead-off batter, he allowed THREE straight doubles and THEN a TRIPLE – ugh.
FIVE innings ~ EIGHT hits ~ FIVE earned runs ~ TWO walks ~ SEVEN strikeouts

the bully was no better . . .
Only Dave Rollins (who struck out the only batter he faced) had success.
Donn, Nick, Edwin and Vidal combined for THREE.TWO innings and SIX earned runs

AT the PLATE
on the surface, it sounded like a successful day – TWELVE hits and SIX runs
~ including FOUR doubles (Dae-Ho, Shawn, Robbie and Nellie)
~ TWO homers (Nellie’s solo shot to extend a lead & Guit’s 3-run shot to tie it at SIX)

But, the early lead and the late comeback were overwhelmed by the Cards SIX homers in FOUR innings 😦

IN the FIELD
* Chris w/a passed ball and Kyle w/a fielding error
* Guti with an extra base hit robbery at the wall

Mariners 8 | Red Sox 4

ON the MOUND
Kuma solid, just shy of quality (one too many runs, though one more inning)
SEVEN innings ~ NINE hits ~ FOUR earned runs ~ ONE walk ~ FOUR strikeouts

Bully nicely done . . .
Dave Rollins back for a bit and Steve w/his SIXTEENTH save

AT the PLATE
M’s bats were none too kind vs. their old pal Elias . . .
~ especially Guti – SIX rbi in FOUR innings (TWO homers and a bases-clearing double)
~ nice patience throughout the line up (SIX walks)
~ Robbie w/his NINETEENTH homer (most ever as an AL 2nd baseman)

IN the FIELD
* TWO dp’s turned, both: Kyle-to-Robbie-to DaeHo
* Ketel with his 10th error 😦

bull pen

ON the MOUND
We knew going into the game, it would be a bullpen day . . .
} Tony Zych started things off well, going TWO.TWO giving up THREE hits but NO runs or walks and FOUR strikeouts
} Mayckol Guaipe did not fair so well , giving up TWO runs on THREE hits and ONE walk
} Logan Kensing gave up ONE run and was only able to retire ONE batter
} Ron Rasmussen retired the only batter he faced via a strikeout
} JC Ramirez had the roughest night of all allowing THREE runs on TWO hits and a walk
} Joe and Dave each posted a scoreless inning
} Danny lasted TWO full and allowed ONE run on THREE hits and posted THREE strikeouts

AT the PLATE
TWELVE total hits but, only TWO for extra-bases . . .
~ both homers as Kyle (26th) and Nellie (44th) go back-to-back in the 5th (both career highs!)
~ Ketel had TWO hits and Jesus S had THREE! (first career THREE hit game)

IN the FIELD
not a terrific night in the field FIVE total errors (FOUR by the ‘stros)

everybody contributes

ON the MOUND
Roenis was ON FIRE to start . . .
– He retired NINE in-a-row to start the game (w/SEVEN strikeouts – all swinging!!)
– He allowed his first hit in the 4th, a single, followed by a DP and a line out
– He allowed his first walk n the 5th but, got a strikeout and a couple of ground outs
But, then came the 6th, where Roenis seemed to not recover from an error . . .
– the first batter reached on the error
– the second and third walked
– a ground out scored a run and that would be it, still a pretty decent outing . . .
FIVE.ONE innings ~ ONE hit ~ TWO runs ~ ZERO earned runs ~ THREE walks ~ EIGHT strikeouts

Stellar job from the ‘pen . . .
Logan, Dave, Danny, Carson and Joe combined for:
THREE.TWO scoreless innings ~ THREE hits ~ ZERO walks  ~ SIX strikeouts

AT the PLATE
Only NINE total hits but, FIVE for extra bases . . .
~ Robbie, Jesus M, Guti all with solo shots
~ Nellie with a TWO-run homer (his career high 41st!)
~ Kyle with a double and TWO runs scored
~ John with a sac bunt squeeze that scored Sean (John’s first career RBI!)

IN the FIELD
* a nice Robbie ‘glove-flip DP
* Sean with a nice diving grab in the OF
* Roenis’ error

g122-124 | woeful series w/the pale hose . . .

A couple of things that are abundantly clear (though may get a bit lost among the bullpen blow ups and the offensive woes):
~ Much as I love Crazy Legs, have to admit that Ketel is making a great case to be the shortstop of the future – awed by his defense and not too shabby as the lead-off guy
~ Nelson is on FIRE
~ Guti, when in, has also been smokin’ hot
~ Robbie and AJ aren’t doing too bad either
~ the bullpen CAN be lights out but, is usually the opposite

the future is now

Mariners 4 | White Sox 11
‘t wasn’t a very Happy Felix Day . . .
far from his worst outing and, he did give them a chance (which Nando, Dave and Rob did NOT) but, not near what we expect from Felix. As for the bats, the power was there (two homers: Mark and Nellie, a double: Ketel) but, as per usual, the production w/RISP was not.

Mariners 3 | White Sox 6
Really too bad for Vidal . . .
as he pitched really well, allowing only ONE run through his SIX.TWO innings (a solo shot in the 2nd) but, as has been the story more often than not of late – the bullpen (specifically Danny and Carson) melted down, allowing a combined FIVE runs in the 9th (that tied the game) and the 10th (that won the game for the Sox)

Mariners 8 | White Sox 6
Hey, look, a win!!!
A great first FIVE innings for Tai but, then he fell apart a bit in the 6th when he allowed two singles, a double, a homer and FOUR runs (one, an inherited runner that Kensing allowed to score) and Seattle’s lead went from 7-1 to 7-6. Thankfully, the M’s picked up an “insurance run in the 8th and were able to hold on the the 8-6 score as the bullpen of Carson and Tom actually did their job well.
