rt3 – oy. | NewYork, Toronto, Boston

Started out OK in Tampa Bay – taking the series 2-1 but, it was all downhill from there . .
series loss in Toronto and SWEPT away in Boston.
‘t will be a bit difficult to focus on the positive – or, maybe it will be easy, as there is little of it 😦

TAMPA BAY
THREE 1-run games and the M’s took TWO

  • Marco w/a QS and the W in game ONE
  • Jesse w/a THREE-run homer in game TWO
  • Bats heated up to the tune of SIXTEEN hits in game THREE, including . . .
    -FOUR doubles (Abraham, Adam, Ty, Jesse)
    -TWO homers (Julio, Cal)

TORONTO
A bit of everything . . .

  • Not much was working in the FIRST game: only FOUR hits, ONE double (Jesse); Chris did an admirable job, posting a QS w/SEVEN K’s but, the bullpen fell apart.
  • In the SECOND game a GREAT start by Logan (7IP-6H-3ER-2BB-9K) went to waste, as SIX hits yielded ZERO runs
  • Finally, in the THIRD game, the offense woke up pounding out TEN hits, including THREE homers (Abraham, Ty and Cal) and Marco posted another QS for the WIN

BOSTON
Hey! The M’s scored a total of 18 runs in FOUR games (4.5/game)
(unfortunately, the Red Sox scored a total of THIRTY-THREE runs in the same FOUR games)

  • game one: TEN hits, SIX runs (including doubles by Eugenio, Ty and homers by Dylan, Julio) should win it but, another rough outing for the youngster (George) and an even rougher performance by the bullpen, t’was not to be
  • game two: despite the still/recent torrid bats of Ty, Eugenio and Abraham and the decent start by Robbie (not so decent bullpen) – ya just can’t win it in Fenway w/THREE runs
  • game three: bats a bit better w/TWELVE hits, THREE doubles (JP, Mike, Julio) yielded FIVE runs but, despite the game being tied at FIVE for the majority of the game – the bp (Drew) gave up a triple and a single and what was the winning run, in the 8th
  • game four: ANOTHER nice start by Logan wasted – the M’s trailed the majority of the game, Eugenio homered to tie it in the 9th, Adam hit an RBI single to take the lead in extras – but, Munoz would give up a w/o GRAND SLAM in the bottom of the 10th

This game was the M’s 41st comeback victory and their 12th straight vs the A’s
And, it was SO cool to see the youth, the future, getting it done . . .
No matter what happens over the next three games – the experience for them is INVALUABLE.

  • SUPER outing for young Logan: 5.2IP-3H-1R-1ER-2BB-4SO
  • Smith got the last out of the 6th
  • Castillo struck out TWO but, allowed a solo shot to re-tie the game at 2-2
  • Sewald + Steckenrider = TWO scoreless innings

AT the PLATE

only SIX total hits but, that’s all they needed (along with capitalizing on some A’s goofs)

  • 6th: Mitch and Ty both reach via error: Jarred 2-run double to take the lead
  • 7th: Dylan walk; JP hit n’ run single; Ty sac-fly to break the 2-2 tie
  • 8th: Abraham with a solo shot

IN the FIELD

  • no DP’s or errors

  • able to overcome another extremely short outing by Kikuch (3IP and 3ER)
  • bullpen stupendous, combining for 2ER over SIX innings

AT the PLATE

  • A’s scored early, M’s scored in the middle, went ahead and made it last
  • only SEVEN total hits but, FIVE for extra-bases
  • doubles by Toro and Raliegh
  • homers by Raliegh, Haniger and Torrens

not Anderson’s best effort but, he still gave them a chance: 4.2IP-7H-4R-4ER-3BB-4SO

especially when the bp tosses 4.1 innings of ONE-run ball (Sadler, Smith, Misiewicz, Castillo, Sewald)

‘t was a barrage of TWOs sprinkled throughout the lineup . . .

  • Toro: TWO-run double in the 1st
  • Kelenic: TWO-run double in the 7th
  • Marmolejos: TWO-run single in the 9th
  • Crawford: TWO-run homer in the 9th

IN the FIELD

  • zero errors
  • DP (Toro-Crawford-France)

  • Kikuchi: 1.2IP-3H-6R-4ER-4BB-0SO – obviously not a good day and not helped at all by his defense . . .
  • much of the bullpen didn’t do much better
  • Andriese posted TWO scoreless frames w/TWO strikeouts

AT the PLATE

unfortunately, not much to see here . . .

  • a TWO-run double by Toro the only scoring for the M’s
  • each team recorded EIGHT walks (but Mitch was the only M’s BB to score)

IN the FIELD

  • Toro’s error was a costly one
  • Kikuchi had a pick-off

  • Flexen: 6IP-4H-3R-3ER-2BB-4SO
  • Swanson+Sewald+Steckenrider+Ramirez = combined for FOUR scoreless innings
  • Andriese gave up a run in the 11th
  • Ramirez got the “W” – and, SO deserved it – with a runner at 3rd and NO outs in the 10th, he got out of it!

AT the PLATE

  • going into the 10th – tied at THREE – the M’s had posted only FOUR hits
  • couple of caught stealing in the 10th prevented any runs in that frame
  • but, SIX hits and SEVEN runs in the 11th sealed the SWEEP!
  • no homers needed: Seager, Toro, Murphy and Bauers all had TWO RBI each

Toro again! Not as dramatic as last night but, turns out a sac-fly in the 6th was all that was needed 🙂

finally, a one-run victory (SIX of their last SEVEN losses have been by ONE run)

also nice to repay the walk-off vs. the Rangers (what IS it w/this team? = M’s kryptonite!)

ON the MOUND

AT the PLATE

  • only SEVEN hits and only ONE for extra bases (Toro double)
  • a bases-loaded walk for Kelenic tied it in the 6th and Torrens’ walk-off single won it in a walk-off

and how apropos that the DH get’s the walk-off hit – given Gar’s statue was unveiled today 🙂

IN the FIELD

  • no DP’s
  • no errors
  • but, some stellar defensive plays

Disappointed that I didn’t get to see the “unveiling” in-person (I was there for his induction to the M’s Hall of Fame, as well as his retirement ceremony ❤
