g151 | I sense a pattern here ~ M’s stuck on TWO, Tigers adding on . . .

Mariners 2 | Tigers 6

ON THE MOUND
Brandon with one of his best starts of the season . . .
He needs to gain efficiency, as it took him 86 pitches to get through FIVE innings but, considering the competition, this was an extremely encouraging outing for Brandon.
FIVE innings ~ FIVE hits ~ TWO earned runs ~ TWO walks ~ SIX strikeouts

As for the bullpen . .  . blech!
the combination of Yoervis + Charlie + Carter = FOUR earned runs on FIVE hits and TWO walks. Bobby was the only effective one, striking out Fielder for the last out of the 8th

AT THE PLATE
When your offense has FIVE extra base hits . . .
~ THREE doubles (Michael, Carlos, Kendrys)
~ ONE triple (Michael)
~ ONE home run (Raul’s 28th)
it SHOULD bode well. When they only have ONE other hit – it doesn’t 😦

IN THE FIELD
NO DP’s, an error by Zunino, some lazy play and a bad throw – not exactly sterling today 😦

g150 | dog, er . . . tiger, days

Mariners 2 | Tigers 4

ON THE MOUND
Joe had an ominous start, allowing a couple of singles and a WP in the 1st for the Tigers first run . . .
he then settle down and cruised through the next FOUR innings (with the help of a couple double plays). But, with TWO outs in the 6th, he gave up a walk (to Miggy) and THREE straight singles for the Tigers next TWO runs and that would be that.
5.2 innings ~ SEVEN hits ~ THREE earned runs ~ ONE walk ~ THREE strikeouts

} Tom was able to get that third out of the 6th right away but, allowed a run on a couple of singles in the 7th
} Ollie posted a clean inning but, ‘t was too little, too late for the O

AT THE PLATE
Only SEVEN total hits  – TWO of the extra base variety – from the young and the old . . .
~ Abraham’s hot bat stays that way with TWO more hits, including his 2nd homer
~ Raul hit his 20th double

IN THE FIELD
* Justin with a rare error
* Carlos, while he didn’t get any hits, filled in nicely for Brad at SS (including being in TWO of THREE double plays)

Ups, Downs, all-arounds . . .

Just catching up on some of the movement of late.

Brad Miller’s call up set off some dominoes . . .
Reporting to AAA Tacoma were IF Carlos Triufel (optioned to make room on the 25-man roster) and RP Josh Kinney (out-righted, to make room on the 40-man roster) and 3B Ty Kelly (received in a trade from Baltimore for OF Eric Thames) and 1B Alex Liddi was designated for assignment.

Minor League Recognition . . .

M*A*S*H
* Guti back to the 15-day DL (hamstring) after only playing 1.5 games back from his last stint
* Michael M (strained quad) is getting close to being sent to Tacoma for a rehab assignment
* Jesus Montero scheduled to DH tomorrow in AZ (will be limited to DH/1B for the remainder of the year)
* Danny Hultzen was scratched a couple of nights ago from only his second start in Tacoma since coming off the DL – tests revealed no structural damage but, he’ll have 10-14 days before throwing again.

International Free Agents . . .
M’s sign 16-yr old Venezuelan OF, Greifer Andrade
Top-30 and where they’ve signed

g78 | Pirates find treasure at The Safe

Mariners 4 | Pirates 9

ON THE MOUND
The bad news ~ so much for “Safeco Joe” . . .
1.2 innings ~ SIX hits ~ SIX earned runs ~ ONE walk ~ ONE strikeout

The more or less expected news ~ Blake with decent mop up duty . . .
4.1 innings ~ FOUR hits ~ ONE earned run ~ TWO walks ~ TWO strikeouts

The good news ~ with a 1-7 deficit, Tom got a chance for his “soft-landing” . . .
struck out the side (swinging, looking, looking) in the 7th

Back to bad news ~ Carter continues to have long-ball-itis . . .
TWO more homers (his 8th and 9th of the season) one in the 8th, one in the 9th

AT THE PLATE
~ Only FIVE hits but, a decent XBR ratio 😉
~ Kyle’s a solo shot in the 6th and Justin’s a 2-run in the 9th
~ Carlos had his first RBI on a single in the 2nd

IN THE FIELD
* web gem from Carlos (at SS) backing up Kyle who got an in-between hop and had the ball deflected off his glove – Carlos made a rocket throw to 1B
* Nick with his FOURTH SB
* Kyle with a rare throwing error – would have been the third out of the 6th instead resulted in the Pirates seventh run

g65 | Kuma = im.pres.sive

Mariners 3 | Astros 2

hey – don’t look now but, the M’s just passed the Halos 🙂

ON THE MOUND
Kuma extended his SCORELESS innings streak to 23 2/3 before the Astros’ UNearned run scored in the 3rd (via Brendan’s missed throw from Kuma on a DP ball).  In the 7th inning he gave up his THIRD walk ~not of the game~  but at Safeco Field THIS SEASON! Krueger called Kuma’s delivery “coin-operated” 😉 With a 7-1 record now and a WHIP of 0.82 and an ERA of 1.79, I’ll just call him GOOD.

105 pitches ~ SEVEN innings ~ FOUR hits ~ ONE unearned run ~ ONE walk ~ EIGHT strikeouts

Kuma bein' Kuma | Elaine Thompson, AP

Kuma bein’ Kuma | Elaine Thompson, AP

} Carter and Charlie combined for a ONE-hit 8th
} Tom came in to earn his 16th save (despite giving up one run) and hand Kuma his 7th victory

AT THE PLATE
~ Raul’s 12th homer tied the game at 1-1 in the 4th
~ Kendry’s infield single (don’t see THAT everyday) w/Kyle scoring on the throwing error gave M’s the 2-1 lead
~ Michael M (and his sore quad) extended the lead to 3-1 with an RBI double in the 7th (and left for a pinch runner, just as a precaution)
~ NINE hits, FOUR for extra bases, good to see. 2-12 w/RISP, not so much
~ Kyle’s hitting streak ended at THIRTEEN
~ Truinfel with his first hit of the season
~ Kelly with his second double in as many games

IN THE FIELD
* beautiful 4-6-3 DP to end the 7th
* Truinfel got caught in a run-down but, was able to stay long enough to advance the runner to 2B
* great foul over-the-shoulder catch by Kendrys to end the game

tweet of the game . . .

guess I missed this . . .

g151 | finally – a witness to victory

Mariners 6 | Rangers 3

Seems like forever since I attended a win (I believe it was back on Supreme Court night) so, it was good leave the field with a little spring in my step for a change.
‘Kuma was solid…
He continues to make a pretty strong case for the starting Ro next season.
He gave up 8 hits but only 3 runs and struck out 4 in his full 7 innings of work to earn his 7th win.
bullpen back to form…
Pryor and Wilhelmsen each gave up a hit that went for not and The Bartender earned his 28th save.

‘t was a first for the SS…
Carlos Triunfel made his first major league start – he got a hit, scored a run and collected his first MBL RBI (solid RBI double). He also made some nice plays in the field (including being a part of THREE double-plays).
Nice to see some POWER tonight…
THREE doubles (Smoak, Wells, Triunfel)
ONE triple (Guit)
ONE homer (Miggy with a 2-run insurance shot in the 8th)

Ackley left the game with a stiff neck …
Seager moved to 2B and Liddi came in at 3B

M’s have played the Rangers tough this season…
current season series record is 8-9 AND the M’s have out-scored the R’s 84-69
Let’s tie the season series tomorrow and win it Sunday 🙂
