By far, Nate’s best start . . .
(despite having to get an extra out when Robbie lost track of the outs)
SEVEN innings ~ TWO hits ~ ZERO earned runs ~ THREE walks ~ SIX strikeouts

Bully . . .
} Tony walked a couple and gave up the ‘stros only run
} Monty posted a clean sheet 9th including TWO K’s

AT THE PLATE
THIRTEEN hits, only THREE for extra bases but, ONE of those counted for FOUR runs 🙂
~ Robbie collected career hits 999 and 1000 in the 5th with a 2-run single (and a third run scored on a throwing error)
~ then, in the bottom of the 7th, after losing track of the outs in the top of the inning and not completing an easy DP, Robbie redeemed himself in the best, most dramatic way possible . . . GRAND SALAMI!!!!
~ Guti and Kyle had a rough night (both hitless)  but,
~ FIVE others had multi-hit games including Marte with a THREE-hit night and THREE runs scored

* Robbie with the brain-fart (all things considered, we’ll forgive him 😉 )

obviously, too many walks but, the solo shot in the first was the only XBH against him and that “getting out” part gives him a little grit factor 😉

Lots to like here! (as @Gary Hill would say 🙂 )
~ first double-digit hit game (12) since the last two games in the opening series in Texas
~ only the third game the M’s have scored more than THREE
~ FOUR extra-base hits (THREE doubles and a homer)
~ Robbie, Nellie, Adam and Chris all with multi-hit games
~ more walks than K’s (when does THAT happen?)
~ in fact, the fewest strikeouts (THREE) for the M’s in a game so far this season
~ Seth and Guti shared the DH spot tonight (Guti getting over the effects from the flu) and combined for ONE run, TWO hits, TWO rbi and ONE walk
~ Chris with THREE hits, including a TWO-run homer
~ Ketel with his first SB
~ Kyle REALLY starting   s   l   o   w   (he’ll get it turned around though!)

IN THE FIELD
} couple of nice catches in the outfield and fine plays in the infield
} no errors (but the Yanks had one)
} no DP’s turned (though the Yanks turned THREE ;-( )

A’s only had ONE less strikeout, ONE more double, same number of homers (1) but, SIX more hits and, what really matters, FIVE more runs

ON THE MOUND
Nate’s pitch count early on seemed to doom his outing . . .
though he managed to recover fairly well from the 37-pitch 1st inning, and didn’t give up more than singles until the mistake in the 5th for a TWO-run homer
FIVE innings ~ SEVEN hits ~ FOUR earned runs ~ ONE walk ~ SIX strikeouts

The bully of:  Tony, Vidal and Monty combined for . . .
FIVE innings ~ FOUR hits ~ TWO earned runs ~ ZERO walks ~ FIVE strikeouts

Despite the continuation of a couple streaks, the O was inept for the most part . . .
~ M’s have hit at least ONE homer in the first FIVE games (this time Chris)
~ going back to last season, Robbie has hit i 21-straight games (this time with a double)
~ but, only THREE other hits, all singles

* at least no errors tonight 😉
* no DP’s but, an outfield assist

Vincent (W), Peralta and Zych combine for FOUR scoreless (only ONE hit and FOUR K’s)

ELEVEN hits, SEVEN  for extra bases . . .
~ Robbie with his second homer in as many games, Nellie and Seth with their first homers of the season, and Luis with the first of his homer of his career (in his M’s debut)
~ Nori, Nellie and Seth all with TWO hits
~ Ketel, Guti and Dae-Ho the only batters without a hit
~ Chris the Catcher with a single, walk, HBP, ONE run and ONE RBI

silliness of the game . . .
So, in the 8th, after giving up TWO homers and TWO doubles (and immediately after a visit to the mound from his skipper) our old friend Tom plunked our new friend Chris. Chris ended up crossing home plate later in the inning. Tom ended up with an early, mandated trip to the clubhouse.

ADAMlind 1B veteran solid first baseman with some pop but, only vs. righties
DAE-HOlee 1B   welcome to the U.S.! ~ plan to platoon with Lind vs. lefties
ROBINSONcano 2B after double hernia surgery in the offseason, bound to bounce back!
KETELmarte SS tasted the big leagues last season ~ won the starting SS spot out of ST this year!
KYLEseager 3B had a rough year at the hot corner (after his GG) but, looks to continue his upward trajectory at the plate
LUISsardinas U young at utility not always the case ~ hopefully, he can get some consistent time

OUTFIELDERS | THREE new guys

NORIaoki LF consistency seems to be his motto ~ as in consistently on base
LEONYSmartin CF stellar defender at a crucial position (and a new daddy for the second time!)
SETHsmith RF great against righties, will platoon with Guti
FRANKLINgutierrez RF here’s to keeping him healthy, then there’s no stopping him!
NELSONcruz DH key is keeping fresh and focused  ~ no doubt Gar can help with that

At-a-glance observations . . . 

  • lack of lefty pitchers is a bit concerning
  • mix of platoons/experience of the position players seems like a great balance
  • from all accounts, newbies and veterans alike are “all in” on the vision and philosophy set forth from day one of the new regime and, to a man, they are all focused on C the Z

We knew going into the game, it would be a bullpen day . . .
} Tony Zych started things off well, going TWO.TWO giving up THREE hits but NO runs or walks and FOUR strikeouts
} Mayckol Guaipe did not fair so well , giving up TWO runs on THREE hits and ONE walk
} Logan Kensing gave up ONE run and was only able to retire ONE batter
} Ron Rasmussen retired the only batter he faced via a strikeout
} JC Ramirez had the roughest night of all allowing THREE runs on TWO hits and a walk
} Joe and Dave each posted a scoreless inning
} Danny lasted TWO full and allowed ONE run on THREE hits and posted THREE strikeouts

AT the PLATE
TWELVE total hits but, only TWO for extra-bases . . .
~ both homers as Kyle (26th) and Nellie (44th) go back-to-back in the 5th (both career highs!)
~ Ketel had TWO hits and Jesus S had THREE! (first career THREE hit game)

IN the FIELD
not a terrific night in the field FIVE total errors (FOUR by the ‘stros)

Ketel hit his FIRST Safeco Field homer (second total) but, other than that milestone, not much to see here . . .
only FOUR total hits (Ketel’s homer the only one for extra bases)

I attended the last game – a fun one!

Kuma was awesome . . .
he was only able to make it through SIX innings but, FOUR hits ~ ONE earned run ~ ZERO walks ~ NINE strikeouts

The bullpen has been out of this world in September and meeting the Halos was no different . . . .
ZERO runs allowed in this series!

The unlikely hero of the night was Jesus . . .
THREE-run bomb in the 4th – and that would be that 🙂

Plus, a couple of extras . . .
~ some fireworks between Weaver and Seager
~ AND Hyphen working some TV 🙂

ON the MOUND
Kuma, being “the Bear” we all know and love . . .
He was cruisin’ but, then gave up a homer and a single in the 7th so was pulled after only 79 pitches – but, gave them the chance to win and earn his well deserved 7th victory . . .
SIX.ONE innings ~ FIVE hits ~ ONE run ~ ONE walk ~ THREE strikeouts

the bully bent but did not break . . .
} Vidal allowed a hit to the only batter he faced and Tony had to get the somewhat elusive remaining TWO outs of the 7th
} Logan gave up the only other A’s run and got TWO outs in the the 8th and The Bartender continued his nice run, by earning a FIVE out save (his TENTH)

AT the PLATE
Only EIGHT total runs (and only ONE for extra bases – Mark’s double) but . . .
singles, stolen bases, wild pitches and sac flys were enough
(the base-running, despite Ketel’s SB, was more than questionable 😦 )

IN the FIELD
* No DP’s but ONE turned against them
* Brad with a leaping snare of a smash liner
* Sean with a great running catch
